Hate to lose a game to a team that is not as good

Correct, they were missing their center and had to start Fulkerson instead. Losing Alexander makes them an entirely different team, he’s their rebounder inside and thir best shot blocker who protects the rim for the Vols. They aren’t nearly as good without him.

Probably the difference in the game. We had NO answer at the low post on defense.
They drove the lane at will and when we helped they popped the trey.
Beautifully played by LC.
Hurts but have to remember where we were 3 seasons ago.

Did you notice 3 or 4 players surrounding Williams with every touch that he got in the paint? When that happens your guards must make them pay. Ours did not.

Bingo! We simply did not knock down wide open looks. We need to shoot threes in the off season til we puke. Especially Bone. Not having Alexander was huge. Loyola got lucky on the game winner. Tennessee is a way better team. For our inside game to work we have to be a threat from outside.

Tennessee may indeed be the better team but need I remind you the primary reason for RB leaving Texas was because for the last several years he could not advance beyond the 2nd round of the NCAA where coaching rules the day regardless of talent.

Yep, and Texas definitely upgraded. They barely made it in the NCAAT much less got past the first round.

Agreed. Just wish they could have found a way to win it.

For what it’s worth I thought Loyola played very well. Clearly they are a very good team.

Their ball movement was the best I’ve seen at the collegiate level in years and their defense was disciplined and consistent throughout.

It was like we were playing the 2015 Atlanta Hawks.

How did ETSU do in the postseason?

The Loyola 1 & 2 have been playing together since 3rd grade.

I don't know if you can say they are not as good.

Barne's coaching strategy and game day was very good. The full time court press forced a set of fatigue errors and turnovers by Loyola toward the end.

The teams were even.

It was like a home game for them: stronger cheering section, ref double standard, and better (more engaging) play list from the Pep Band.

not sure where we were the first 37 minutes of this game, but that was not the same team I have watched this year.

I understand your frustration. This one hurt. IMO, Loyola is a very good team. I love the way they ball.

Loyola is an incredibly coached team that has junior and senior leadership. They have talent. They may not have a flock of 4*s, but they can shoot and play great defense. They’ve bought into their system 100% and are great fundamentally.

Their offense is incredible. They basically play “keep away” until there’s a breakdown. It’s the best passing and ball movement I’ve seen. Our guys ran their guts out chasing the ball. It wore us down.

- Admiral’s early foul trouble and early exit was a big factor. Not having Alexander’s defense, rebounding and offense really hurt us. If he plays we win. Funny how we don’t appreciate someone’s contribution until they’re missing.

- Their freshman center was impressive. He also had 4 assists. Their point guard is a seasoned, savvy surgeon. They have great shooters. As I feared, Jackson filled it up.

- We didnt play great, but showed heart coming down the stretch. It hurts. Proud of what we accomplished this year. Thank you VOLZ!

I don't think Barnes is a good tournament coach. I have a feeling Tennessee fans are going to see this scenario play out repeatedly.

What is the difference in a "tournament" coach and a regular coach? He doesn't stop being a good coach because he's in a tournament.

I. I guess UNC and Xavier don't have good "tournament" coaches either.

This has been a weird year.

He is getting us to a tournament which is better than I can say for most Tennessee coaches lately.

I think Barnes is a better coach than Pearl or Cal...

And think he can coach Tennessee teams to the elite eight every year.

Only thing that’s holding Barnes back is he’s not getting those same caliber type players that Pearl & Cal is getting.

He’s able to coach up 2 & 3*s to a consistent level which isn’t a bad thing at all.

.

Don't think that is true.

The guards are not recognizing quickly enough how to distort defenses to create driving lanes. The coaches need to teach that for the team to do well in tournaments.

... Maybe the mantra should be: you don't learn anything from a jump shot.

Primary reason for Barnes leaving Texas was his refusal to fire one of his assistants. But hey, facts.

Give our Vols all the credit in the world and give the second ranked mid major behind Gonzaga some respect. It is debatable as to whether we were better than the number 4 ranked team in the country in scoring defense which held Tennessee to the same 62 points a game that they gave up against their entire schedule. Their defensive coaching has to be brilliant to achieve that.

Lol

Wouldn’t have asked him to do that if they thought he was winning enough. Keep it real.

I am keeping it real. If he had done it, he'd still have been employed there. So wins/losses obviously wasn't the PRIMARY reason.

Basketball isn’t like football, a team can get hot and another team can get cold. It’s a lot more unpredictable in that sense.

The NCAA tournament is a crapshoot. Virginia, Cincy, Mich state , Xavier, Tennessee, UNC and many others lost to teams they should have beat. But it’s basketball and there is a reason it’s called March Madness. Kevin Ollie won a title and is now fired from his own Alma mater for missing the tourney two years in a row. Our elite 8 team probably wasn’t as good as our 31 win team who ended losing to Louisville in the sweet sixteen, but it is what it is.

It’s a crapshoot.

But with Barnes he at least has an impressive record of getting to the tournament consistently. From there anything can happen, which is all you can realistically ask for.

It seems like Bill Self has had Kansas as a 1 seed every single year yet they’ve only been to 1 final four in the last ten years. You won some you lose some.
