Has This Team Quit?

Have you played a full season of college basketball? It is a grind and will wear you out no matter what the level.

Even NBA players have to take games off and that's their full time job.

It is, but coaches need to understand that too. I recall Pearl saying his first year, by about half to 2/3 the way through the conference season they rarely practiced because of the fatigue. If you know the team is not conditioned enough to survive, you need to do all you can to make sure they can perform in the games.

Yes but I even remember Pearl's first year towards the end of the season, he was warning fans about the team being tired. His reasoning had to do with them adapting to his style, but I definitely remember the sound bytes. I think it showed that postseason.

Do we know that Tyndall doesn't understand that?

When I played college ball practices would be 2.5 hours at the start of the season and drop to an hour by February to keep everyone's legs fresh. Practice became more of a walk through.

Well it doesnt seem to be affecting UK, AZ, Butler, Gonzaga, MSU, UM, or any of the other highly ranked teams and it certainly doesnt seem like the lady Vols are running out of gas. Maybe it their mental focus and desire to be successful. Maybe their coaches prepare them better for the long haul. But you are correct "It is a grind". But then again what sport isnt. Seasons drag on and every team has to overcome obstacles. The great teams forge ahead, bond together, and dont make excuses.

Tyndall addresses this issue in the article above.

Are UK, AZ, Butler, etc playing with only 9 active players like us?

Devil's advocate here, but didn't UK play only about 8 guys a couple years ago? I know, I know, the talent level is worlds apart, but other teams have done it.

Isn't that the year they made the NIT? I mean making the NIT at UK is like a losing season here.

I believe this team has given all it has. I don't think they have quit. Look at that Feb schedule and look at this roster. Beside JRich & Armani they really don't have anyone else that you could say is going to give you a double double. They went 1-7 in Feb against some of the better SEC teams. This team coming in lost it's entire initial recruiting class, several others defected and Stokes left for the D-league. This team is right where I expected them. March may not get any better as they face LSU again. Remember what they did to us at home? It's going to take CDT a few years to get this corrected and much depends on his second recruiting class.

We dropped 3 one-possession games in Feb. (granted, we won one in Nashville). The coaches and players haven't quit, even if some fans have.

Considering the dirth of talent, if CDT finishes .500 or better I think he deserves a ton of respect.

Have you even looked at the roster or are you just trolling? Good Lord.

This is a terrible question to ask, because its obvious we have just ran out of gas. When you're only about 7-8 deep there's no chance in hell you're going to keep up with teams like Florida or ole miss this season. Just gotta go out and give it your best shot, and from what I've seen this team has given their all night in and night out despite lacking true talent and depth.

You kind of said it yourself in this. "the great teams" well I hate to break it to you but this isn't a great team. We go 8 deep and 2 of those players would redshirt on Gonzaga or Arizona. So really we have 6-7 legitimate guys who can play! This is just ridiculous.. And to say that Tyndall needs to go out and recruit.. Well he's doing that, and he did that with this past years class. Why don't you try making a team with only 4 returning scholarship players,a couple freshmen, and a bunch of juco castoffs. Probably one of the dumbest posts I've seen.. You can't compare this Tennessee team to UK Gonzaga or any of those teams listed above because their talent level is at least double ours! Yeah this team has a lot of excuses to why they are doing bad, but they are legitimate excuses.

I think the team can't score and were seeing more and more trapping on Josh Richardson making him give up the ball for a missed shot by someone. If for any reason Punter, Mostella, Baulkman, and Hubbs all have a good scoring game on the same night we will win again this season. Defense is ok gave up 66 to Florida, have been giving up in other losses 56 to Georgia, 66 to Kentucky, 67 to LSU, etc. When you give up less than 70 you should win a game every now and then. We can't score enough 53 at Georgia, and 49 at Florida not going to win.

Maybe that was that year, but still, they won ballgames with 8 guys. It's possible.

That was the year Noel got injured and their fortunes went straight downhill. I think we beat them by 30 pts.

We lost Jabari in the pre-conference and we have struggled down low ever since. So you see injuries do make a difference!

Just saw that our win over ky has already been posted. Please forgive.

I know there was a year where Cal made it a point that he was only playing 8 or 9 guys. And that was without an injury. If that was that year, so be it. But the thing with Noel was the team played with him for 75% of the season. A lot different than losing a guy preseason.

I think there's more to it then just running out of gas. We are tried in the legs, but anyone that's played competitive sports knows the feeling of being mentally tired. Basketball at the college level and up is mentally tiring. I think our guys need a break from basketball for a few weeks. It's easy when you are winning, but when you are losing and have tired legs, that's a mental grind. It's so hard to go to practice and wake up the next day knowing you have to do it all over again. The prep before practice is tiring too. You have to eat some carbs and meat a few hours before, you have to stay hydrated, you need to heat your muscles up if you have any type of injury before practice, you have to get taped, and then you have to mentally get in the zone to practice. Think about doing that everyday then having to play 37 mins a night on game nights like Josh does. We didn't have a chance of being a great team this year. All I asked for was some heart, and we haven't been left short of that...
