Has This Team Quit?

Coach had no choice but to play zone all season, there are no players. If he had tried man to man the season would have been a bigger disaster. This was not of Tyndall's making, he has done a remarkable job with virtually nothing. Let him now recruit his players for his offense then measure his performance. Personally I think he is a darn good coach.

I think some of you have an estrogen problem...

Also, some of you need to learn basketball. WTF is Tyndall going to do exactly? This team shoots worse than some high school teams. They are terrible, and Moore/Josh are worn out. Punter is very streaky and Balkman/Mostella/Hubbs/Reese are very, very, very inconsistent. We have no post players. No true PG, though Josh has done very well. No three point shooters outside Punter, or if someone gets hot like Reese/Josh. This team is in rough shape...

Of course teams have figured out Tyndall... I figured him out the first five mins of the first game we played. Our system is, Josh/Moore creates our offense, our defense causes turnovers for easy points, we give the three up because we are so small we have to pack our zone, and we are going to hustle. That's all we can do. All you yelling for a change please let us all know what should be done... Our zone is a man to man match up zone. Our issue comes from having no rim protectors which means we have to double up on pentration. That leaves guys on the outside wide open. When you have shot blockers you don't have to play that way, but we don't. So, we give up 20 ft threes instead of two foot layups. Our other issue is Josh has lost it due to fatigue. He can't stop guards from penetrating our zone and it's getting us lite up. That's what happens when you play a guy 37+ mins a night...

Against fl, we should have shot blockers. Size was on our side tonight.

What drives me even more crazy is everyone saying we need to close out on three shooters better. We play a zone. You close out your zone responsibly, but ultimately we are trying to just contest threes. That's how it has to be. We have to have everyone crash the boards, or we'd get eat alive on the boards every game. Teams would have 15+ points on offensive rebounds. Again no post play...

I get the frustration, but people have to live with teams hitting threes on us. Now, that doesn't mean we should leave them wide open like we have been, but it goes back to Josh/Moore being worn out. Everyone is getting in the lane on us. The kick out is wide open and teams are taking advantage. Doesn't mean I don't get mad about it, but at the end of the day, I see the reality of the situation. We have two good cards in a deck of cards right now guys...

I agree with you overall. But its not the close outs that frustrate me, as much as the over playing and not recognizing shooters.

And siap but what was CT getting on Rich about late in the 1st?

If your defense allows two teams to shoot better at 3 than we do at the line, it is of the coaches making. All season the excuse has been size. They were running 3 sub 6'1 players tonight. Not an excuse. If a coach sticks with a defense that is getting them drilled, and just saying awwww we're young, its on him. Tonight was on cdt.

I don't think CDT is a horrible coach. Neither do I think he is the next coming as a few here does. I think the dislike for CCM lead fans to possibly over value CDT coaching. In his defense, he is working with the short end talent wise. Back to the original topic, I don't think they have quit. What you see is reality and we just aren't a very good team.

We can't play anything else. We can't man up on anyone. Our match up zone has proven that time and time again. I mean look at Willie. He gets lost playing a zone let alone man to man. Owens does too at times. Willie caused a highlight real dunk in the first half because he had his whole body facing the ball man, and guess what happened? He got back cutted for a reverse dunk. Terrible basketball awareness. I'm sure Tyndall has expressed this to him, but he does the same stupid s@@@ game in and game out. He's just not a smart basketball player right now...

In terms of being bigger, everyone in the post dominates us. Period. Moore is a great shot blocker from behind, but he's not a great shot blocker with his back to the basket against guys 4 inches taller than him. King James is a great shot blocker too, doesn't mean I'm going to play him one on one with Marc Gasol. Moore, James, Richardson, etc due their blocking damage from behind. When it comes to man to man in the post, we lose 9 times out of 10, thus the reason we play zone. Our zone works very well, but we are tired and the drop off after Josh/Moore is night and day.

It's not on Tyndall. He has no options. It's his a@@ when he goes out there and puts us in a man to man half court press/trap/regular defense. We would get annihilated if he did that. We'd get scored on in the post almost every play in a true man to man due to the inability to stop pentration. When our post came over to help our opponent would feed their big men and it'd be dunk city unless Moore/Josh was behind them. Until our post develop, we have to run zone. Hopefully, Owens developes into a solid defender once he gains 30lbs.

In the end, basketball is won by rebounding, protecting the paint on defense, establishing a post game inside, shooting and hitting open shots, playing sound defense, and playing smart.

We give the ball away a ton, we can't shoot, we have no one who can protect the rim facing away from the basket, our defense doesn't fair well at times due to overplaying the pentration because we have no inside presences, and we don't play smart at times aka Willie facing the ball man and getting back cutted or Baulkman stepping out of bounds for no reason...

Very good points. But we are now relying on teams to shoot bad instead of us playing well. Willie has A Bball IQ SIMILAR TO STARLIN CASTRO FOR THE CUBS IN THE FIELD. That's bad lol

Unless we can get some good spring period players, we are staring down the barrel of a coach in year 3 with a losing record and on the hot seat, which spells trouble for recruiting.

Everyone is crying about the defense but we held FL to 66 points at their place and if I'm not mistaken we held UK to under 70 at our place. Our offense is terrible...it is our offense that has us in this funk now because other than Richardson we don't have anyone who can step up and score consistently from the perimeter. Find some scorers...keep the defense...we win games. Just that simple.

Agree. A lot of knuckleheads on here can't get it through their thick skulls that CDT isn't coaching these guys to throw up bricks. Outside of JRich, no one on this team can score on a consistent basis. Compare this to last year when you had McRae, Stokes & JRich that on any given night could carry the team.

If after a couple of recruiting cycles we have guys that are still throwing up bricks, then we need to re-think things, IMO.

Just a few points from a former player's point of view. When a team is hitting threes like Vandy did and Fla did it does not matter what defense you play. Watched George Gervin score 60 plus in a game where he was tripled teamed the entire game. Hit 5 three pointers in a row in under 2 minutes is a game myself. When you are on you are on. If you remember Chris Lofton, he did this many times no matter what defense they played against him. Sometimes you are just in the groove. Yes our defense is not that good but tired players make mistakes. We do not have enough healthy players to make a run all season long and that is fact. Do we have deficiencies, yes. Will it take some time and a few new classes of players before we get better yes. Are we considered a basketball school, no. You are just going to have to give coach T some time to right the ship the same as Butch had to do. Please have some patience and give him a chance instead of trying to throw him and the team under the bus. Be realistic. Please.

I don't think this team has quit. I think they know there is nothing really much to play for.

Future recruiting.

If you believe they've quit because they have nothing to play for then they're not VFL. I assure you... a winning record looks better than a losing record. If they don't care about damaging the future of the program just because this years team was a let down, that's messed up. Forfeit the final two games if they don't give a crap. At least we'd finish .500 if you're right that they don't care anymore. It's nice that they want to come here for 4 years and all but the program has been around for 100. Maybe have little pride and show up for the program as a whole and not just yourself. Don't suck the whole program down the tube because you're so self-centered that you believe that this season and program revolve around you. Maybe somebody needs to tell those players that if they're half assing it.

They are still playing for 40 minutes, obviously not with the same intensity since they are down by double digits most of the time. Donnie's tactics were effective early but teams figure you out by the 2nd half of the season. The biggest factor has been the 3 not dropping for us and other teams shooting over 50%. You can't go 2 for 20 every night and expect to win. I thought they passed the ball well and created some great 3 point shots tonight but the basket is the size of baseball cap right now. This is not a tall team, this is not a talented team and other coaches have figured out the defense.

The beauty of this defense is that it's never figured out. If you have the players to plug the gaps we now have in the defense and add offensive output, the game is afoot. This defense is holding the SEC teams to 63.8 ppg through 16 games.

Never figured out ? Seems like Florida "figured" it out. Shot 80% in the 2nd half, or close to it. This defense with this group of players sucks out loud.
