To the extent that had he lost to this particular version of Candy, the pressure to fire him would have been overwhelming, I guess you could say he saved his job. I think the better phrasing would be that he avoided an imminent firing.

This game shouldnt have a thing to do with him saving his job or not. That Vandy team was the worse SEC team I have seen fielded in over 30 years.
