Has "Coach" Jones truly lost the fanbase?

Our team looking completely uninterested at South Carolina was the last straw for me. Losing to that turd of a Vandy team is just piling it on.

I think so. I could barely stomach the loss to USCjr. Then a loss to Vandy in a very easily winnable game....no excuse.

Even the mouth breathers portion that support Tennessee understands that you can't lose to Vanderbilt.

He's a hard worker that is thin skinned and isn't built for this level.

He's put a lot of doubt in our minds that's for sure. I said just the other day that circumstances surrounding him cost us the SC game but the Vandy loss was very upsetting and put significant doubt in my mind.

I'm still going to reserve myself from the "fire Butch" crowd until I see what he does in the off-season as far as getting rid of and hiring new staff. If he refuses to make changes then he needs to go.

He has lost us for the moment but I think he's hiding in the barn.

Has Butch Jones has lost the respect of the long time Vol fan, are most are now convinced that he will never win any championships at UT other than his Champions for Life?

I'd say yes. He's given us plenty of reasons to doubt his coaching ability. I know everyone says he's here another year, but I just don't get the point of keeping him around just to have another disappointing year. It's like knowing you're gonna break up with your girlfriend, so why drag it out?

Been a supporter of Butch. Respect his hard work, rebranding the "program", recruiting efforts(which have been awesome). However, he appears to be the typical "program" coach with a pretty weak in game coaching acumen. I have no idea what team chemistry and culture are like. But I did get some unsolicited input from a high school football coach local to Knoxville who sat behind us at the Ohio U game. The guy stated that Butch has a team culture problem that's well known in local circles. He felt there's a lot of "individualism" -that the coaches were somewhat removed, and that the team lacked player chemistry and leadership. The guy kept saying it to the point that it became bothersome and we got up to watch the remainder of the game elsewhere. I've posted about those comments several times on here and caught some flak. But at the time, raised my eyebrows, didn't dwell on it and let it go. Looking back on the season, I have to wonder if there's a lot more to it.

Now, reading on other sites that Butch didn't travel back to ktown with the team from SC nor Vanderbilt. Also reading from a poster, "Deerpark", who apparently has serious cred with others, that Butch has been unhappy and looking to leave going back to the bowl game last year.

Any input? Is this stuff accurate?

What assistant coach/coordinator in their right mind would come to Tennessee knowing Lyle is on his way out after 2017? They would be most likely be out too.

Never particularly liked the guy, coming in with proclamations of "infallible systems" and "best staffs in America", it just showed an overall arrogance and lack of humility in the face of the biggest job he ever tackled IMO. That has shown through in his comments to the press his entire time here.

However, I respected what he was doing for the most part and was willing to overlook the shortcomings until the last half of this season. He has never shown to be a great tactician but he generally had his teams disciplined and prepared.

Once his infallible system showed some cracks and the Shoop hire proved to be a mistake, he decided to start whining about not being appreciated and getting short with the press and fans the last month instead of owning it. Bolting 4 minutes after the loss Saturday and leaving it to the players to defend the loss Saturday showed just how thin skinned and petulant he really is.

It's really a shame, he recruited some great kids who deserved better. I know Barnett, Sutton, and Dobbs along with all the other seniors will be sorely missed next season.

I don't think what's read here reflects what the fans think - it probably reflects what the vocal minority thinks.

If he beats UF next year and we're undefeated at that point everyone will be salivating again. If he loses early or ugly to UF expect major pitchforks.

Replace Shoop and a couple others and bring in a good class and he buys himself some more time to break through to the next level.

Keep your $ in your pockets folks. I encourage fans to wait until the boosters and administration get serious about winning before giving them your $.

Agree, on several points. I do like Jones, but this season is a head scratcher. Previous 3 seasons, we were arguably semi-over achievers (not talking about close losses last year, but as a whole), along with being known as a disciplined football team on penalties, turnovers and special teams. This year, the same core of players didn't take care of the ball and were among the worst in conference on penalties. It's on Jones.

Coming into season, many commented on how Jones was more relaxed b/c of veteran team returning. Maybe he loosened up too much w/ the team on fundamentals.

I agree with you.

He's waaaaayyy deep in the hole now, and if he loses to GT the season is going to go downhill quick. Then he won't get credit if we beat GT, and he'll face hell if the team loses to Florida.

Butch needs to go, period. What happened when Fooley lost that last game to Vanderbilt? Well, that same thing needs to happen now. Butch has done better than Fooley, I will give him that. But, that is NOT saying a whole lot. Even Mike Shula was a better head coach than Fooley, and that was with bammer on probation. At the end of the day, Butch is just a slightly better HC than DD. If you look close enough, you can see that we're slowly regressing back to the days of shower discipline and looking for Rommel. The bleeding must stop now. If we were to get a new coach now, at least he would be coming into a better situation than where we were 4 years ago and could build off of that. But, if we wait a few more years when the program has regressed back to what it was from 2008-2013, then we're screwed. Rebuilding jobs are too tough to sell.

If Butch is back next year then I will not be attending any games. Others should do same thing and drop overall attendance

For the moment. People on here are fickle and have short memories.

After we boat race Minnesota and finish something modest like #24, a large portion of the fan base will walk away from the ledge.

What I think will really be the deciding factor is who he decides to fire and hire over the next six weeks and what his language/demeanor is like.

That said, he can go pound sand.

When things start looking grim there's always going to be people who are ready to move on and people who don't want to change. I think we're probably in for a long off season where each of these factions will dig in their heels and turn on each other even moreso than they already have.

The signing class could have a lot to do with how the offseason plays out. The typical fan probably isn't aware of what's going on in recruiting. Butch needs something special to offset the whiffs that he's having on top in-state talent because I guarandamtee you that if signing day were tomorrow the headlines would all be about the ones we didn't get.
