Has Butch had his "Signature Win"

The best win that Butch has since arriving at UT was #11 South Carlonia at Tennessee when the Vols won on a last second field goal to give Spurrier his first loss to the Vols in years.

If we win the East I'd say that's a signature win.

No..if we win the SEC championship...that would be a signature win...winning the east was expected....and that was almost screwed up and still could happen..
...I am a Butch fan, but the way we have performed, particularly the first few games, has got me doubting his game prep and in game decisions

.ok..i get this..why so aggressive against the team?,... Dudley is gone..program on up swing..

not sure im following your pattern of post..but who cares im just a poster on volnation.

I have no clue what you're trying to say. My post history has nothing to do with this thread.

I'm the one actually defending Butch in this.

I wouldn't say we "screwed up" if we lose the East at 6-2 and UF wins at 7-1. If we lose because we are 5-3 then I would agree.

One definition of 'signature win': "a win that has people talking about it well beyond the normal football shelf life of seven days."

Another: "Beating a team ranked higher than us."

Yet another: "Shocking the nation with a win that is monumentally unexpected."

As you can see, this is another thread that really just boils down to semantics. How you answer the OP depends entirely on how you define the phrase.

I personally like the first definition best. It's fluid enough that it doesn't get bogged down in exceptions and one-offs, but still solid enough to provide a real measuring stick.

Using that, here are what I would tag as the signature wins of each of Butch's first four years:

2013 - beating #11 South Carolina, 23-21.
2014 - beating Iowa in a bowl game, 45-28.
2015 - beating #19 Georgia, 38-31.
2015 (alternate) - beating #13 Northwestern in a bowl game, 45-6
2016 (so far) - beating #19 Florida, 38-28
2016 (alternate) - beating Va Tech 45-24 in front of largest crowd in history

As for the signature win of his career, I don't think Butch has had that yet. He hasn't yet met the third definition of "signature win," that monumentally unexpected win that shocks the nation.

It will probably come against Bama one day. Hopefully this December, but if not, more opportunities will come.

Go Vols!

Good post VFL-92-JP.

I wouldn't call beating Northwestern last season as a signature win. The beatdown was impressive, no doubt. However, that wasn't a very good team despite their ranking.

Funny things happen in bowl games which is why I never put too much stock in them. With that said, you can't argue with CBJ's preparation for bowl games. He takes them seriously for which I'm glad.

Yeah, same here, Boca. Love a coach who sees the value in entering the off-season with a hard-fought victory as the team's last on-field memory before they spend the long winter months in the weight room...not to mention its value on the recruiting trail.

I like the Iowa and Northwestern wins as "signature victories" despite both teams being softer than folks thought they were (a perennial problem for media trying to find more than two good teams in the B10). Mainly because of that first definition. Folks certainly spent more than seven days talking about both those games; they were portents of a brighter future, each time.

Go Vols!

It only matters what they were ranked when Tennessee beat them. You can't be that dumb. Because they are what they are when Tennessee plays them. You don't project forward or backward.

Tennessee beat the 11th ranked team that day. Where they ended up is irrelevant.

Only one poll so whose dumb?

Vanderbilt's win was against #6 South Carolina in 2007. South Carolina lost their last 5 that year to end up with a 6-6 record. But yes Vandy can say they beat a top ten team.

I think anyone with simple intelligence would say where the teams you beat end up in the final poll would carry the most weight. Otherwise, it is just someone promoting a particular agenda.

Butch has several signature wins and really the only one left is Bama. His teams have come from behind and beat Florida and GA. He just needs to keep getting recruits and keep winning.

Butch has done everything except beat Bama.

He has won us bowls, rebuilt our depth, and ended many losing streaks.

If he beats Bama this year or next he is q God in Tennessee.

On topic, I believe he has had several signature wins.

With James Franklin beating number 2 Ohio State....it got me thinking. We have had several great wins. Florida this year comes to mind but has there been one better during his time here.

Probably beating Georgia the past two years is the next best win. Last year, it turned the season around and the hail mary this year might be the play that sends them to Atlanta.
