Has Butch had his "Signature Win"

But if they had been ranked number 1 that day and ended up not ranked - you would be using the reverse logic.

This isn't my argument. The narrative would be that Tennessee beat "then #1 Alabama."

Where the team ends up is irrelevant to the game at the time it's actually played.

The only rankings that matter are the final rankings. A team could start off ranked #1 then lose five games, when it's all done a win over a five loss team really doesn't mean anything. Another team could start off unranked lose one game and win the championship. The team that beat the unranked one loss team accomplished more than the team that was the first to knock off the #1 ranked five loss team

They weren't when Tennessee beat them. Streak intact.

"Well they may have finished in the top 5 but they were 11th in the AP Poll when we faced them so it doesn't count."

Wonderful logic. And to think a lot of you were saying final rankings are the only ones that matter.

#8/#11 at the time we won, and finished #4 in the final poll? Yeah we beat a top 10 team recently, and to say otherwise is beyond foolish cherry picking.

Too bad it was just South Carolina. /zing

With James Franklin beating number 2 Ohio State....it got me thinking. We have had several great wins. Florida this year comes to mind but has there been one better during his time here.

His most impressive win was his first year against South Carolina. Can't think of any other wins over teams that good.

I think South Carolina was 11 when we played them that year and I think they ended up 4 at the end of the season. So technically we beat a top 5 team.

Agree for the most part but wins do change in significance when all is said and done. I mean the UGA win isn't quite what it was after they lost to Vandy at home.

Butch hasn't and likely won't have that signature win. He goes into the ultimate b mode in big games. Watching other teams win against great teams as underdogs makes me jealous because you always have to take chances to beat a great team. And Butch takes no chances. Lol. He epitomizes the play to not lose thing

So the question is really - what is a signature win? Many on here seem to define it as beating a much better (typically top 10) team when one is not predicted to do so.
But that would imply that a coach who takes over a team that is already ranked high, can never have a signature win.

So I googled to see how others define a signature win and found the following:

Searching for definition of signature win

This article offers up the notion that a signature win is one that folks are still talking about after the normal 7 days.

Given that both Georgia wins qualify as does the South Carolina win in 2013. And Florida, this year would qualify as well.

With the exception of Bama he has beaten all our rivals. He owned Spurrier before he retired. He has won all his bowl games in convincing fashion. Is Bama the only possible signature win on our schedule?

Then there are the folks that are saying that Kentucky's win over Mississippi State was Stoops signature win ... and Mississippi State is 2-5.

I think some of you on here just want to dis-credit anything and everything Coach Jones has done.

How is South Carolina not a signature win? They finished #4 in the nation and had a chance to play in the national championship if not for losing to Tennessee. Them not being in the top 10 when we played is just arbitrary bull****.

And then there is this quote:

"Ed Orgeron won a signature win against a top 25 opponent here Saturday night at home in Death Valley against rival Ole Miss in convincing fashion 38-21."

This seems to imply that one can get a signature win by beating a top 25 opponent that they were suppose to beat.

It only matters what they were ranked when Tennessee beat them. You can't be that dumb. Because they are what they are when Tennessee plays them. You don't project forward or backward.

Tennessee beat the 11th ranked team that day. Where they ended up is irrelevant.

Then when UGA finished unranked last year I guess you didn't hold that against TN for beating s rsnked team right?

Rankings are completely arbitrary numbers. They don't really mean anything until the end of the year for playoff placement.

And from wikipedia ...

"On October 19, 2013 in Neyland Stadium, Jones led the Vols to a win over the eleventh–ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. This was widely considered Jones' first signature win. Jones' second signature win came on November 1, 2014 at Williams-Brice Stadium against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Vols trailed 42–28 with 5 minutes remaining and came back to win 45–42 in overtime."

We were underdogs vs SCAR in 13 and 14 point dogs vs UGA last year. Won both.

It was a signature win. Some folks just don't like the coach.
