Lets say the rumors are semi accurate and we offer Gruden 8-10 years at say 5million a year. I haven't seen where anyone asks what happens if he's a bust by year 3-4. Would his contract hamstring us and put us in the worst possible scenario. Like it or not, it is a possibility. Nobody knows how he will turn out. To me, it's just something to think about. Not a negavol, just want to protect Tennessee from burying themselves with too big of a contract. I don't see us being able to float that contract and hiring a new staff.

That kind of contract would be loaded slightly in the backend.

fyp.

and yes, that is the nightmare scenario. If Gruden were to suck as a college coach, our AD would be in a world of hurt financially. I am guessing that perhaps the Haslams and Thornton have agreed to insure the AD in this case. I hope so.

I'm willing to swing for the fence and accept the consequences if we miss. If Jon Gruden is a bust, I accept that we'll have to hire up and comers for a while afterwards.

I think Gruden would, without a doubt, get more than 3-4yrs. He's earned it. Dooley on the other hand, hasn't. Didn't come in with any credentials, and shouldn't receive the same level of patience as one who does.

He'd start at "Year -3" so we'd have to give him at least 6 years to equate to the Dooley measuring stick.

Yeah, at this point, I'm all for just assuming Jon Gruden will be our own Saban and giving him whatver he wants to come here. If somehow he fails and it cripples our athletic program so that we have no money for the next decade, oh well, so be it. Even if we gave Gruden an 8 year contract, a huge salary, and an astronomical buyout, it's a sure bet compared to hiring a WAC loser and giving him a 5 year contract with 5 million dollar buyouts.
