The Marquette interview made it obvious that the UT/Cuonzo relationship was going nowhere. So if you wanted a new coach and you're Dave Hart what's the best way to get one?

Fire him? No, there's the buyout. Plus the guy just wrapped up a well timed tourney run.

Wait out his contract? Hammers recruiting and leaves program in limbo. Horrible PR.

Make a lowball contract offer with a nominal extension? Bingo. By insulting him with that extension, CM looks for another job. Not only do you avoid a buyout, you get a buyout from the school that hires him. That's a $2mil+ swing. Then you can say all the right things to the media so you look like the victim and pursue the coaches you really want with your new buyout money.

Time will tell if this is how it played out or if Hart really has no interest in basketball and hires a low mid major bargain.

I would suggest that if Hart had no interest in bball, he wouldn't have hatched such an exit strategy for Martin, but would have committed to him long ago. The fact that he was not content with CCM tells me he cares about bball. Otherwise, he would lock CCM up for sake of continuity and to focus on other things

Sorry, never mind. I misread your post.

Hart made the best decision. He gave Zo a decent raise and a 2 year extension. You can't fire a coach who made the sweet 16 in the same year, no matter how the team got there. He took a no win situation and made the best he could of it. Zo is not Hart's man, so this is best for everyone involved if Hart doesn't see him as the long term fix.

I don't know of anyone that follows the program closely that would argue that Martin was the long term answer at UT. Everyone expects them to struggle next season with the loss of Stokes and three other starters, and with the class Martin has signed it will take them time to develop the Freshmen players. Next season will be very difficult for whoever coaches the Vols.

Tells me he knows squat about basketball. Also shows me he'll talk about what's expected and then run you off when you meet that criteria. Not a coach in the world that will go for that. A lot of Tennessee fans need to feel a lot of pain. And it's coming. Plus, if we're going to pay in the bottom of the SEC, I'd say we should expect bottom of the SEC. Of course, we got more for our money with Cuonzo.....but he's thumbed his nose at this place.

He was offered two more years, which would have extended his contract for a total of 4 more with a great raise.

Zo had issue with the lowered buy-out, because Zo knew he hadn't built a sustainable product here. After you read the idiotic racist angle from Forde, he also admits that.

who ran him off? He left on his own and probably for less money than Hart offered him. The difference is that he's going to a situation where he'll have 4 or 5 years guaranteed employment where if he'd stayed and the team tanks next season he'd be fired with only a 1 million dollar buyout.

I think it was clear to both of them that parting ways would be mutually beneficial. Wouldn't surprise me if they actually discussed the best way to go about doing it, the result of which we see now.
