The football search was a botched search. The fact that we were publicly turned down by multiple coaches (not including Jon Gruden) was embarrassing. When conducting a coaching search it is much better to keep you cards hidden in order to not embarrass yourself and to not give any other potential candidates leverage if your top choice does not work out. If Butch Jones turns out to be successful, it will not be because he was Dave Hart's top choice but because he lucked into him. This search is following a similar pattern and therefore does not give me confidence that Dave Hart will make a good hire.
This forum is worse than a new reporter trying to get his first scoop. The very reason Dave Hart made this a one man search was to keep the details private. I guess he figured that was the only way he could do it. Nobody knows anything except him. He probably is letting all these media concocted rejections of UT run their course just to say in the end none of them are true. Do you really think he is leaking the fine details of contracts and why a coach rejected them? If you do, there is a nice bridge in Brooklyn for sale dirt cheap!

By the way, 10 or more good coaching years left!!!
Just the one where he ended up hiring the 4th or 5th option in Butch Jones. (I like Butch, but he wasn't number one on the list). Some would argue he had every chance in the world to hire a Super Bowl winning coach and didn't want him. Of course, that's just hearsay.
So the search for Butch Jones was a failure? Maybe it's just me, but a coaching search is a failure one of two ways:
The Dooley search where no one will say yes, or having to overpay for someone that isn't a good fit.
I just don't think you can say a search is a failure just by the fact you don't get the top guys on the list. I honestly see Tyndall as almost a basketball version of Butch, great personality. If you could get him and he wins then no way this search is botched.
For the record its easy for the other party to leak it after they decline the job or whatever. It looks good to your current team, fans, boosters, etc... when you can say a major conference school wanted me but no thanks!

We all like CBJ. But don't be fooled Hart didn't get CBJ, he ended up with CBJ.
First...I have seen no official statements of the sort you are referring to. Second...it works both ways. A coach who has never been contacted but was rumored to have been could say "I'm not interested" to garner the same effect you are suggesting while not technically lying.
It isn't like the sports media or the fans care to fact check. It's just all about what feeds a popular narrative.
Give credit where it is due. Rarely, do institutions get their initial target. A good AD hires a successful coach regardless. That happened with Butch Jones and honestly, CBJ could not have been a better fit. Dave Hart is looking out for the University of Tennessee and he WILL NOT hire a coach and have him bolt in year 2 or 3 of the contract. He's better than that. Dave Hart is doing his due diligence in this search and he's done a fine job at UT thus far. Reading the posts on this site make it seem like we're playing a video game or something. Let the process play out, and be patient.
You obviously haven't followed many college coaching searches. Very very few college AD's get their first, second or sometimes third choice. Being turned down isn't embarrassing and besides that half of what we hear isn't true. Maybe White was unreasonable in his requests who knows. It's next to impossible to keep a coaching search "hidden" when most of the coaches interviewed are not going to keep quite. You really think hart is calling the media updating them on his every move?
