I like Gruden...really...BUT here's the head coaching record:
Raiders: 38-26, 2-2- in NFL playoffs.
Bucaneers: 57-55, 3-2 in playoffs. Super Bowl championship in his first year after Tony Dungey was fired from the job.
Total: 95 wins, 81 losses (.540 winning pctg.)
How does this translate to guaranteed success as coach of the Tennessee Volunteers?
just askin'

I don't think anyone has said success is guaranteed with Gruden, but if you have any kind of success in the NFL then theres a darn good chance you CAN have success in college.

The big thing about Gruden is the excitement he would bring back to UT for both recruits and fans. Also, he would bring instant coverage from the media. Essentially, he would wake Tennessees football program from its long hibernation, instantly.

After reading that article, it seems that if UT doesn't land Gruden, it could be an even longer rebuilding process.

I want Gruden because he will be up at 4am watching film of UT rivalry games from the last 20 years
I want Gruden because he would say 110% effort would be considered "not trying hard enough"
I want Gruden because he would have gotten in Da'Rick's face and told him to get his act together
I want Gruden (in the words of young Phillip Fulmer) 5-stars would come to Rocky Top like Muslims to Mecca
I want Gruden because "He would Give His All for Tennessee"[/QUOTE]

I'm not so certain about this one...he may give his all for himself in an effort to get back to the NFL if things don't work for him at the college level...not that he's going to coach on the college level anyway

Wow who would of thought that firing Dooley may have saved this recruiting class instead of hurt it.

Imagine if we do get Gruden and we close with Derrick Green, Marquez North, Jaylen Ramsey, Cornelious Elder, Jordan Wilkins and Von Bell and plus Reeve Koehler. This would be an instant jump in the rankings. Plus not to mention who else might flip like maybe a Jason Hatcher.

I absolutely agree with you. Good points. Truthfully, I think this entire coaching debacle has got me "fired up" because I so very much want to see the program return to the prominence I believe it so richly deserves, but we can't do that if we don't have a coaching staff in place who's willing to go out there with a passion and fight to recruit quality players... fight to get this program back at the forefront of domination.... basically it's an equation... strong quality determined healthy players + aggressive and passionate coaching = games won.

Lol no problem.. I think the dooley regime has made everyone a little on edge..

Then next year if we get Hurd, Malone, Kelly, The Berry Twins, Bates, and Warthon thin it would not take long for us to be back on top.

Hmmmm.... That's interesting because your screen name is Jeff Hostetler and I believe he has not played football since 1998.

Lol you must have missed my whole point. 18 year old kids that we are recruiting def do not remember the game. I'm saying I'm 26 and Vols fan and its not like I can quote every player from it like some of you. I'm comparing me to the 18 year olds from different states who are not vol fans.

Those with all the hype about Jon Gruden as coach of the Volunteers need to pause and consider some things:
(1) Does Jon Gruden want to be here? If he doesn't have his heart in it, then we don't need him.
(2) It has been indicated that he might consider if he becomes the highest paid coach. If it's all about money, with the financial condition of the athletic program, his motivation is wrong.
(3) Is he looking at this job as a career position or a stepping stone back to the pro ranks? We need someone who wants to bring UT football back to title contender for the sake of the school and fan base and donors. Loyalty is lacking in many programs, it's more about "What can you do for me".
I don't know his thinking but the point is, he isn't our only hope. There are other candidates that can recruit and coach just as good as Jon Gruden that have proven it at the college level.

Excellent post!:good!:

I still think he is coming.....but everybody assumes he wants to come and what if that is not the case.....

Do we give him every demand he asks for.....no way....if he is not willing to meet us halfway then no way....problem is I think he is meeting us halfway and we are not......

Still think he is going to be here......for at least 5 years.....mama is the key......he is good....as a coach he is a workaholic and we will never see this team unprepared for a game as long as he is the coach....

Is his heart in it......still think he will be here.....to many moving pieces.....

Same things were said about Fulmer

When you have to win in the SEC, you have to look over some of the "talent" in Tennessee. Its sub-par compared to other states

It is what it is

Sorry some get their feelings hurt over it

Yeah, Donte Hightower and Barrett Jones were sub pr too......

I don't think it's the wins/losses for Jon gruden that make him appealing. What makes him so valued is what he has in ties to coaches, NFL owners, and NFL players. Not to mention people consider him a great mind of the game. Winning and losing in the NFL is alot different than in college, I mean imagine being a kid in high school with tons of talent and you have Al golden or jg? Who knows more on how to get you ready for the pros and who has been there. Tons of kids know Jon gruden and not Tennessee and that is why he is so valued. It's his name that will sell the University.

It's just like calapari at Memphis. Nothing appealing whatsoever in the city, I know I've lived here all my life, but cjc sold himself and brought Memphis back since Larry finch. Now he is gone and pastner can't coach to save his life even with a talented roster.

So its the name GRUDEN. It's appealing and exciting. It would bring recruits in groves and with the right scouting, ones that are talented and work in his system. If Jon gruden is the coach it will change things immediately strictly on the name.

Go vols

He will also have his pick of the best assistant coaches football has to offer!

It don't. See below. However, God forbid you try to tell any of the people in the "coaching rumors" section any of that.

Define success. Gruden's name shouldn't be anywhere in it.

But waitadaggoneminnit!!! Stop the presses and all that, too!!! From Jalen Hurd: "If they were to get a guy like Jon Gruden, that would definitely be a factor for me. He's somebody you know has coached at the highest level and knows what it takes to win and to get you to that level."

HOWEVER.....he goes right on to add this little gem: "Tennessee can't sell their past to guys my age," Hurd added. "It's been so long since they were really good, like five or six years ago, that guys my age were too young to remember that."

It was 2002 when Monte Kiffin's defense won the SB for Gruden. How is it that it's okay if it's Grubage, but bad if it's Tennessee??? Riddle me that.

It don`t.

Precisely.

Do your research

He did. I did, too. See below. If you're still a Gruden fan after that, you......yeah. Here's some knowledge and FACTS (which are pretty hard to argue with) about everyone's fair-haired golden boy, Jon Gruden. Let's see if MAYBE it'll go over better in here, the rumors thread has gone completely nuclear in terms of stupidity.

I think this should end the Gruden talk. However, it won't....which is disappointing.

Me?? If the show cause could be lifted: Jim Tressel. All the man does is win wherever he goes, and he's GOING to get a second chance somewhere.

If not: Butch Davis.

Sorry dude but after gruden gets his last check from Tampa Bay, which is tomorrow, he will be clad in orange and you sir will eat your words. Nobody will ever be calling for Dooley to come back.

Obviously you don't understand how college football works in that the name Gruden will instantly make the vols better. All the sudden these 5 star kids see Jon gruden and kno he is an nfl guy. Your statistics in the pros are so skewed bc of a dozen factors or so.

If you hire him, the will come, and we will win
