Hart has failed (again)

He's coached against Pearl before and almost beat his 2 McDonald's All-Americans with a Missouri Valley Conference roster.

Yes, I recall, but that was before. Bruce will want redemption not against Martin, but rather Cheek for firing him in the first place, and Martin won't be able to do anything about it. Except stand there with that clueless look on his face that we have all see too many times before.

Butch bailed Hart out with killing it on and off the field. However, I'm afraid Hart will always be the guy who talks the talk but is always afraid to pull the trigger. He balked when Strong wanted more and he balked at not making a smart financial move with Bruce. Just my opinion.

Butch killed it on the field? What?

(I think it's been great that we've had "Gruden-lite" this offseason with the basketball team).

Hart has failed again.

First, he allowed Bruce to go to a rival. Second, he failed, as with the Gruden rumors, to put the kibosh on the possibility of Bruce coming back home this year.

He would have sat on his hands with Dooley except for the colossal failure to find Rommel. He is sitting on his hands with Cuonzo now. He has articulated no vision for the program.

The only good news is I like our chances of bringing back Bruce next year if we have the season we expect next year. I should say "would" like our chances except for the dynamic duo of Hart & Cheek.

Nothing against Cuonzo. Cuonzo >> Dooley. However, we had the basketball Gruden equivalent in Knoxville (possibly >> Gruden), and the AD has to date seemingly done nothing (again).

I would think Auburn would have a hefty buy out clause in contract to make it very expensive for Bruce to leave Auburn for TN.
I am sure this deal will be nothing like the deal Hamilton did with Kiffin.

Let's say you are right, I'm not, but just for fun let's say you are right.

What difference does it make?

Auburn would have waited weeks for Bruce to decide. They have no chance whatsoever of finding a coach better than Pearl AND they had plenty of time since they fired Barbee very early in the process.

It would have been nice to see IF Cuonzo can win tomorrow night before sending Bruce to an SEC school. If Cuonzo loses to Iowa, who here still thinks he is the answer? If Hart then makes a move, but did not even consider Pearl and hires a bluelight special coach as Tennessee ALWAYS does in b-ball it matters a ton.

Now if Cuonzo wins tomorrow AND Friday, AND Sunday than you are correct, it would not have mattered in the least.

I am glad he went there now we don't have to waste time on him in threads anymore, he

was not coming here even if we had a coaching change, just would not have happened.

You just can't fire CCM after he guided UT to the NCAA Tournament!

Well, they fired Jerry Green after he lead us to 4 straight NCAA Tournaments (1998-2001) while never being any lower than a 9 seed. In hindsight, his firing was much harder to justify than Martin's would be although you don't make that move until the season is over.

Sooo many people here are convinced there was no contact between Bruce and Hart. I am not sure how anyone would know. Of course this also makes it entirely possible that Bruce contacted the AD and said "Auburn has offered, but I would like to come back to UT at a discount." Hart said no and Bruce is a Tiger. :whistling:

It's also possible Pearl said no. Ever think of that?

It is entirely possible. If so, then Hart is waiting on baited breath to see the results of tomorrow's game. If we lose he can prove his mettle by firing Cuonzo and doing something no other AD in Tennessee basketball history has done. PAY FOR A BASKETBALL COACH. Hart can mitigate Bruce to Auburn by bringing in a star of his own.

If Cuonzo wins tomorrow AND Friday than Hart is truly in a tough position. If Stokes comes back, I would be okay with giving Cuonzo one more year. If Stokes leaves you still have to consider making a move, b/c we will suck next year and you are delaying the inevitable.

If Cuonzo wins tomorrow AND Friday AND Saturday, than Hart's decision is easy and I think most fans would be very happy. Cuonzo stays. No question. He gets a chance to prove his mettle next season, and IMO he will have earned it.

It is obvious that Hamilton was a disaster.

The jury is still out on Hart. His fate will be determined by Butch. However, if he is as savy as I hope he is then he will learn at least one thing from Hamilton.......A great basketball hire will buy you time IF Butch's progress is slower.

Amen

Its business. These guys should understand that loyalty to a particular team only amounts to the amount of zeros at the end of the check

Auburn and Bruce deserve each other. He will fit right in with the Cam Newton boosters. He's got gallons of snake oil to sell. He brought the talent in, but how much did he develop it? C.J. Watson (undrafted) and Tobias Harris (one and done) are the only two U.T. players that sniffed the NBA under Pearl.

Bruce going to Auburn does not mean Hart failed.

What was Hart supposed to do, have a secret deal with CBP?

Great post. Bruce was making some questionable decisions as a coach in his last 2 years here, not to mention he was recruiting a few thugs that had no business being in college (it was even alleged that Ramar Smith possibly killed someone here in Knoxville).

Bruce did some great things, but he is a sleazeball as is Tony Jones. Had they not been fired, they would have done more damage to our University than most people realize. They are dirty coaches, and they belong at a place like Auburn.

First, Barbee was Jay Jacobs' hire. He had no choice but to hire a big name, no choice. He fired Barbee as soon as the season was over...he didn't even wait until Barbee got home from the SEC Tourney, his intentions were clear, he was going to be the first one in on the Pearl sweep stakes.

Second, for the same reason Jacobs waited until the end of the season to fire Barbee, Hart has to do the same and one can wonder if the "goal posts" move as much for Hart as they do for the fan base, but had Hart fired Martin after the SEC Tourney loss to the number one team in the country in order to get in on the Pearl sweepstakes, we would be the laughing stock of the college basketball world.

That's, of course, if you believe Hart ever gave Pearl one ounce of serious consideration. I don't.

If he doesn't win out, if he doesn't make the tourney, if he doesn't beat Iowa...never ending.

In addition to all of that, there's a reason Pearl took the Auburn job. There is a reason the BC job came open immediately after and not before Pearl's hiring at Auburn.

Auburn is not a rival.

I'm extremely disappointed. Bruce would be on my Mt. Rushmore of Tennessee coaches behind The General, Fulmer, and Pat.

*builds mt. rushmore*
*stops after 3 faces because gimme a ****in break*

I think Hart is succeeding beyond his wildest dreams. He gets a major program AD job when no one else was willing to hire him as such. He gets to blame his predecessor for years of the worst athletics performance in program history. He doesn't have to take any risks or try really hard to turn things around, because he's not personally invested the program. In fact, he gets brownie points back home the longer he keeps us mired in mediocrity. He's able to avoid hiring home run candidates in the major sports, and most vol fans happily accept it. He's got it set up where he can ride ~.500 seasons in football and 18-20 win seasons in basketball all the way into retirement. Dude hit the jackpot.

The college basketball world is better with Bruce coaching in it...even if it's on The Plains.....the only way I'm upset with Bruce,is that I can't hate Auburn properly now ...really pulling for Cuonzo to show us this was a good thing.
