Let me preface this by saying Harrison is one heck of a good WR. Great hands, explosive and a great route runner. I see guys like Joel Klatt and some others talk about he is the best WR hands down. Really? Let’s see.

Harrison JRs stats through 8:

48 catches for 783 yards 10 TDs with a 16.6 average. It should be noted OSU has played a super weak schedule. Now let’s see Hyatts stats.

Hyatt stats through 8:

45 catches 907 yards 14 TDs with a 20.2 average. It should be noted that we have played a much, much more difficult schedule.

While Harrison is really good, currently Jalin Hyatt is the best WR in the nation.

Hyatt's the better of the two, statistically, and his big play ability makes him a frontrunner for the Biletnikoff.

I'm a homer, I know, but I have a realist approach to my thinking and it's hard to argue against it. No matter how hard I try.

Harrison will be the guy next year, and will likely have an NFL career.

I can try to argue against it. Harrison Jr is better in the red zone and would be better in most offenses. Hyatt is the better option for Tennessee's offense.

Very hard to compare these 2. The combination of Hyatt's speed and our scheme has been a lethal combination. Seems like he's got a minimum of 5 yards of separation on every TD catch. And you can't coach speed. It doesn't mean Hyatt is just a "system WR", but Golesh/Heupel are coaching circles around our opponents right now.

Harrison Jr. is currently a more attractive WR as a prospect. He's bigger, more physical, and makes some spectacular contested catches with the defender all over him. It's not a knock on Hyatt, we just haven't seen him have to do that.

Hyatt is better. He is putting up crazy numbers. Just odd he is so open at times. Him and Hooker are definitely dialed in. You can tell all the offseason work these guys did.

I don’t know how Hyatt isn’t getting some Hiesman mentions with his numbers.

Hooker makes the offense go and deserves that honor but Hyatt’s numbers are comparable, if not better than previous WRs that have won it.

Hyatt 907 yards Harrison 783 yards
20.16 per vs 16.31 per

Hyatt 14 TD’s Harrison 10

Harrison JR is really good

However there is no doubt whatsoever who is better this season.

Marvin Harrison is a much better physical specimen; 6'4" 205lbs

Jalin is stick skinny at 6 ft 185lbs

I think that makes MH Jr the better NFL prospect but not necessarily the better college player. To this point, this year, Jalin has been better. I'd love to see them race. I'm thinking Jalin is definitely faster

I don't think that makes him the best receiver in the country. Hyatt has the potential to be the next Randy Moss, feasting on deep balls even in the league. Scheme has a lot to do with the production, for sure, but that's irrelevant, it's only the production that matters, and Harrison is outside the top 10. You can factor in the competition faced, which isn't irrelevant, and why anyone with sense would pick Hyatt over the three guys ahead of him in yardage. If the season ended today, Hyatt would be holding that trophy.

Like I said, Harrison will likely have an NFL career ahead of him, and might even get selected higher in the draft when he goes because he fits a traditional NFL scheme, but right now he is not a better receiver than Hyatt.

Hyatt is a burner used to exploit mismatches in space. He's listed as 6'0 180lb.
Harrison Jr is a more all around receiver listed at 6'4 205lb.

Which is "better" is a function of what you expect them to do.

Hard to compare players that play in different systems from a stat perspective. I've not seen Harrison play so I don't know. CJH's schemes get Hyatt running wide open. Harrison may have the same or better numbers as Hyatt if he wore the Orange and White.

@ BTO ... Great job with the stats!!!
Do you happen to know the 'targeting ' numbers and the % of catches? I did a quick look and could not find them.
Just curious if that adds any color to the picture.

They say men lie, women lie but numbers don't lie.

But they can lie. The comparison by the OP is skewed. Now, if he had done this for the two men's teams playing the same opponent, it would have been more accurate. Just to be the devil's advocate: There are lies, damn lies, and then there's statistics. I still think Hyatt is the best WR just the same.

I don't really think it's fair to say either player is "better". They are just different and each is great in their own way, just like Randy Moss and Jerry Rice were different.
