Here we are, 16 games into Heupels career at Tennesse and we are ranked #11 in the country.

I did not see this happening this quickly. How about y'all?
10-6 overall and trending upward.

It's definitely trending upward.
Keep in mind a lot of teams in front of us lost. We also beat a team in front of us.

JMO Tennessee hasn't even played their B+ game yet. That Pitt game was awful...but they fought through the mistakes and won against a solid opponent.

Besides Bama, the only team that can challenge UGA is a Tennessee team playing its A game!

two year win totals of hires post fulmer:

kiffin: only stayed one year (7-6)
dooley: 11-14 (year 1: 6-7)
jones: 12-13 (year 1: 5-7)
cornbread-13-12 (year 1: 5-7)
heupel: so far 10-6 (year 1: 7-6)

Out of the 5 most recent hc hires, Coach JH needs 4 more wins to have the highest number of wins in his first two seasons (14)

This is expected. We have been recruiting top 20 classes minimum every year for the past 15 give it take a couple. Josh is doing well but he hasn’t done anything until he beats a team that matters. He can do that this weekend. And no I don’t count Pitt.

Welp then your opinion doesn’t matter. Pitt would throttle Florida.

Agree 100%. If we find/keep that B+ game, look out. On flip side, think Pitt was stouter than many give them credit for, but being ranked 11th at this point is good, but fall will be fast if we don't bring our best game for UF/LSU games. If we handle them, I could see a #6-7 going into Bama game. Oddly, though LSU played pretty well against MST Saturday, I'm more nervous about UF game than LSU. There's a value in seeing our pace LY and adjusting from an "in game experience" (Pitt for example) and think we could make Death Valley awfully quiet.

Was a bit taken back this am when they flashed the Top 15 on the TV and we were #11. Initial thoughts:
  1. We don't deserve it. Too early for such a high ranking (read more....)
  2. But wait, Oklahoma State and Kentucky and Arkansas are ranked above us?? Seriously?
  3. We do have a powerful offense loaded w quality players at every position (plus TWO excellent QBs and a host of dynamic receivers)
  4. Our Defense is solid and confusing other teams. Our coaches are outcoaching opponents. OMG, what a novel yet simple idea! Blitzes and stunts and different looks Oh My!!
  5. We are starting to see real leadership on the sidelines and on the field
  6. The players and coaches are playing as a team - not a bunch of people looking for individual glory
  7. Hey, we should be in the Top 10 dang it!! (we will be this time next week!!!)

I understand the optimism. However, it's all very fragile and hangs on the outcome of this next game. A win will justify the optimism, a loss would be a huge negative mark and leave more questions about the direction we're headed. Either way, this forum is going to need some extra bandwidth Saturday night!

I‘m actually shocked Cornbread had more wins than Jones. Between Jones, Dooley, and Cornbread I actually thought Jones was the best.

It is indeed fragile and unexpected but ooooohhhh so welcome.

What is interesting to me is the enormity of the turnaround and the speed at which it happens really puts to the lie all the claims that I think were accepted by most that any turn around will HAVE to take at least 3 years before we see any real results.

Im not saying we are in the clear yet - Florida, LSU and KY games will be the real markers - but its truly amazing just how fast things can change when you do have a good coach (and get lucky to be in early NIL time where we could refill our horribly depleted roster with transfers).

Remember when Cornbread won the 1st two games of the 2020 all-SEC season? He was 15-12 and had won 8 freaking games in a row. ... Then he lost 7 of his last 8.

I didn't know much about Heupel when he was hired other than that he was a great QB. My buddy who is an OU fan said we got very lucky, and he was unhappy that OU wasn't going to get him back. He was right about him for sure.

Tennessee is such a special place. Any coach and AD with any leadership talent and coaching talent will succeed here.

I was not a huge fan of the hire at first, but realized it didn't matter what I thought about it and just took a wait and see approach. So far, I am pleasantly surprised.
Exactly...I was expecting a cross between Dooley and Jones. Did Not see this coming.

Lots of us didn't get it when Heupel had the team playing dodgeball and games, but guess what..... he understood what was needed and got the team to buy into his plans and support each other.

The Hooker and Milton friendship could've gone the way of Favre and Rodgers but I believe Josh Heupel is not only a quarterback whisper, but he also leads all the young men to fundamentally understand and believe in the concept of teamwork.

Who knows what Heupel's ceiling is as a coach but I'm impressed.
