They can’t afford him at the $23.5 mil franchise price tag. This is a ploy to get some compensation for him…like they did with Sneed last year. Only way they sign him to a multi-year, is if he gives them a hometeam discount…like $20 mil a year. Even that straps them with some key defensive free agents to retain.

Chiefs traded Thuney to the Bears. This gives them enough room to sign Trey to a long-term deal.

But their deals aren’t fully guaranteed, aside from Watson. Those deals could net more than that. The NFL really doesn’t fully guarantee deals.
