Hands Up Don't Shoot?

Probably a union thing, didn't want to get grieved by the EMS union.

LOL, I see what you did there.

IIRC, I believe someone from the FBI arrived on scene and was the one to administer first aid, but that was like 4+ minutes after the shooting.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Death penalty for stupidity? Obviously, he was doing something very stupid. No one is debating that. You refuse to get past that point. The question is, did he deserve to die for the stupidity of his actions?

I do not think so. I do not think someone could make a valid argument that death is what he deserved.

I do not think this guy deserves to die as well. Just like I don't think babies should be aborted for stupid actions. (Much like this guy)

The bottom line is the guy was a loony and if he was actually sane then this was probably a suicide by cop situation. If he wasn't actually sane, then they shot a guy they could probably have subdued and put in a straight jacket. Either way it doesn't look good for the police to be doing this in front of the whole town.

Regardless of how you feel about the police, there is a distinct difference between the present and the recent (say last 30 years) past. The police appear to be very quick to shoot these days. The common theme in many of these events is "comply or I will shoot you." Back in the day, you might get beat up, put into submission etc, but the last thing they wanted to do was actually draw their weapon and fire. There was just too much paperwork, investigations and general hassle when you did that. What has changed?

I recall hearing about the best way to handle N. Korean infiltrators when I was over in S. Korea. These were special agents who would infiltrate into the south to spy or sabotage stuff. If you were a S. Korean police officer who came across one and you arrested him, you were instantly removed from society, placed in a secret holding area to be debriefed and never heard from again. If you shot the infiltrator, you were rewarded with a house, pension and your own TV special. Not surprising there weren't many infiltrators arrested...

So, what has changed to make shooting the first (or nearly first) choice for our police forces these days?

edit, in support of my LE friends...police appear to be a lot less reluctant to shoot then previously.

I would say thank goodness somebody videoed it so at least justice will be served but.... Let's be honest. It probably won't.

Honest answer to this problem:

Increase standards for becoming a cop. Increase pay to attract better candidates.

It's the same problem the military has. The military gives guns to people that score a 30 on a multiple choice test. That's why I'm never shocked when I hear about our troops doing horrific things in Afgahnistan

We havent done anything "horrific"..

unless you count pouring water in someones face or blasting new Metallica at detainees..

BSNBC doesn't report the good. I can assure you, there's been a lot of good things the military has done in Afghanistan.

I'm not implying that overall the military does more bad than good.

I am implying that we should probably raise standards a bit before we turn an 18-19 year old loose with a gun.

If you score in the 30s on the asvab, you are a complete idiot.

They let you in with a 30?

They kicked a guy out of the testing room for failing when I took mine (years ago mind you)

And this was condoned by the US Military?

Be careful here sparky...

Try to keep up. I've never proclaimed it was accepted. I claimed that it happens, and that we could probably avoid some of this if we increased standards

The minimal score is in the 30s for all services if memory serves me correctly.

My score was a 93 or 94.
