Hamilton still brought in an underqualified candidate

Redskins fans always criticized his intelligence. His constituents always criticize his intelligence.

No way he should ever be in charge of all of UT athletics. No way. Worst idea I've ever seen on this forum.

Who is more qualified? If I recall correctly...more than one said no thanks.

I guess we could have got Cutcliffe???

Since he's so experienced with shady land swaps, maybe he can annex Mt Leconte for the university in exchange for, let me think, some place with little value...the soccer stadium.

Failed? We don't know that yet.

At least MH didn't go out and get a Leach type. As for Kiffin, he is what the vocal majority was clamoring for at the time. Will CDD be successful? I hope so. In that event there'll be no need for a new AD.

CDD appears to be a southern gentleman while not being part of the Vol "Good ole boy" network. He will represent the University well.

Let's say we did hire a "BIG FISH". Who's to say that person will do any better than Dooley? The "BIG FISH" could fail just as easily. Let it play out. I think Hammy just might have found a diamond in the rough.

The guy's solution to every problem in government is simply "spend more, tax more." He would be great if you think that UT tickets don't cost enough already. I already spend more than I should on season tickets... don't want to spend any more.

And as a redistributionist, he would cut pay for Pearl and Dooley (and staffs), to give massive pay increases to volleyball and swimming coaches, so that everyone is "equal."

if kiffin was still at TN today no one would be saying Hammy should be fired. kiffin left for his dream job. it sucked but i look at it this way. if i was coaching at a big school like ohio state, usc, etc and TN offered me the job, i'd take it in a heartbeat and most of everyone in here would as well. i knw ppl are butt hurt but get over it

Hamilton was given a simple, yet URGENT mandate earlier this week. Go out and hire THE MOST QUALIFIED Head coaching prospect available. Quite simply, HE FAILED in that mission. Just as Fulmer FAILED.

He put the fanbase, players and recruits in a tenuous position of having to HOPE his hire pans out. His resume has nothing tangible to sell a recruit or a player for that matter. This job is the engine for all the Athletic Program...and he took it to "Joey's Budget Auto Shop" for repairs.

I hope that someone here who knows someone in or close to BOT members can ask them about reaching out to Heath Shuler to immediately replace Hamilton as our next AD...a businessman and Politician who bleeds Orange.

Congressman Heath Shuler, Representing the 11th District of North Carolina

How did he fail? I guess it was because we failed to hire John Gruden, Bill Cower, Bob Stoops..... ETC. The guy has not coached a single practice, much less a game. If you are truly upset and can't live with the hire, it is your god given right to find another team to root for. Do you really think coming out and calling for peoples jobs, and boycotting games as others have suggested will make this team better? PAITENCE GRASSHOPPER:banghead2:

TeNNaFAce, we are a long way from finding out if this was good hire or not. Kiffen was a train wreck that's for sure, though I really think he was hired more for his Daddy then his own resume. A lot depends on how the touted "lane recruiting class" holds up, but I give DD and Hamilton the benefit of the doubt, at least for now.

I believe Hamilton did the best he could do under the circumstances. Nobdy could have handled the first day on the job better than Dooley has. Let's give him a chance to prove himself on the field before we start casting further judgment.

Go out and hire THE MOST QUALIFIED Head coaching prospect available.

Be realistic. No AD was going to be able to hire THE MOST QUALIFIED candidate given the current state of our program. If it was 1999 or 2000 we could have hired a huge name.

Give Dooley a chance and be patient.

And, I think a job as a congressman is probably more desirable than AD.

Well...the big difference is he bleeds Orange, and has the Program's best interests at heart. Hamilton does not. He is a Clemson transplant, and is only looking at his ledger...not trying to get the best guy available in order to restore UT back to National prominence and relevance.

He obviously was looking for the best bang for the buck hire. That is not what he was tasked to do. Whether Dooley pans out is immaterial at this point. Hamilton settled from the very start on the lowest budget coach we could settle for. He aimed low when he should've aimed high.

Why then should he be allowed to hang around for another 3-4yrs and botch another hire, or make another move like jack the ticket prices up in a recession...or charge students for the first time, in ages?

In my book, with the whole Kiffin affair, he was already treading thin ice. He hired a guy looking for a paycheck to hold him over, and sold him on his losing record...and as soon as he gets a chance to go back to his previous college coaching spot...he bails and leaves the program to suffer collapse for it. The $800k buyout was an open invitation to leave...while we would've, in return, been on the hook for 7million.

An AD couldn't make a worse bunch of gaffes than this guy. Kelly, Wittingham, Peterson, Patterson, etc...was far more qualified than Kiffin. I said this emphatically during the coaching search last year...so I'm not saying this with the benefit of hindsight.

After the Raiders firing fiasco where Kiffin was called a liar, and we were told ahead of time that he would destroy this program...Hamilton ignored it like many of us did...once again HOPING for the best.

If Hamilton had hired the MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE AVAILABLE then as he was tasked to do this week. We wouldn't be in the mess we are in today.

It all comes down to his philosophy in a coaching search. The mandate is the most qualified...not one who has no resume but promises and all-star staff...but the most qualified, and one with character. There were a dozen of those then, as there is now.

Hamilton chose to bring budget into this hire, when that is the least to be concerned with with this hire. If this one fails the whole ship sinks. We didn't send him out to find the cheapest coaching prospect he could...but that's what he had on his mind.

Heath Shuler would be a dramatic improvement over Hamilton, IMHO...regardless of where he is politcally.

Dude, please get some help. Who would you consider to be the most qualified to coach? Also, do you think the good Congressman will forfiet his seat to become the AD for UT? Please get a clue on the real world.

I am a Duke alum married to a USC alum and we go to the home football games. So I have followed these events very closely. I have always thought highly of Tennessee football and know that it has very passionate fans.

Here are some things I don't quite understand:
1. Why was Fulmer let go? Was it just for a change or are you looking to compete with Meyer etc?

2. Why Kiffin? I don't remember the timing. Were you rushed into it? Was he the first choice? I thought he was a bad hire by the Raiders, a bad hire by Tenn and a bad hire by USC.

3. Did Kiffin do a good job?

4. Why was his buy out only $800K? Peanuts in todays world. That would not stop a top college or any pro program. Was your AD trying to keep him from taking a high school job?

5. Duke loves Cutcliffe. Why did so many not want him here?

It just appears to me that Tenn wants to compete with the big boys but wants to do it on the cheap. I hope Dooley is successful. If he is then you will have to open the pocketbooks. Do you have the resources?

Wish USC luck with Kiffin. I am not sure that he is as bad as everyone says but he very well could be.

SoCal

1. Two losing seasons in last 4 years (29-21, .580)

2. Rumor was Hamilton chose Kiffin over Kelly. Not sure Kelly would have taken the job, but obviously a better choice in hindsight.

3. 7-6 and one good recruiting class. He did ok.

4. Hamilton messed up again here.

5. Cutcliffe has been at UT twice as OC, the fans wanted something different.
