Hamilton just wanted new years day bowl

I think the article is focused more on the policy he pushed to keep the championship game loser from falling too far in the bowl pecking order. In other words, to prevent what has happened to big 12 CG losers going to the Alamo Bowl (before New Years day).

Not that I'm currently a huge Hamilton fan.

If I understand this correctly, All MH really wanted was a new years day bowl game. Thanks Mike..thanks for only demanding mediocrity. I guess if you set your goals low, you won't be too disappointed.

I would say that you completely missed the point of the article. It had nothing to do with Mike Hamilton's goals for our football program.

I think you're right....I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way....I'm not a huge fan of his right now either:sick:

Yeah I re-read it and it makes more sense now. I missed it completely. That makes this thread kinda stupid, even if I did create it.

Yeah, the whole condescending "wait until the season's over and don't let emotion play into it" only when it suited his agenda still has me steamed.

average is good at tennessee, just look at the fans. outback bowl is better than what they expected. that is what is so sad about our program these days.

Speaking of looking at the fans, where were you sitting at the SECCG game last weekend Champy?

i guess that's all i felt like the article was saying...''at least get UT in a new years day game" i know it wasnt really..maybe it was the timing of the article. my dumb thread, and i won't mind it being deleted if anyone wants to...i probably should have read it and thought about it for a while

and FYI, I don't think it's possible to read the article and then someone say we failed to read it...we failed to understand it! :)

I think that in some folks minds the idea of a New Year's Day bowl still connotes something special. The truth of the matter is that that the BCS system has rendered all but four bowls + the CSG pretty much equal. Either you're in the BCS or you're not. After all, there are some "low tier" bowls played even after New Year's Day.

Yeah I noticed the after new years day games as well.
I guess the good thing about having a new years day game is the tv exposure and possible help in recruting.

I don't consider $200K and $4MM equals. Now they all pale to the $17MM on the plate for the BCS, but let's not get crazy in being too negative.

oh, it matters to the universities that are participating, of that there is no dobut.

but the fans' perspective, they don't care about the pay outs other than to know that it's a good thing.

HB's point is correct. I don't like it, but i can't argue otherwise. i am one of those that still tries to think that a New Year's Day bowl still means something.

the reality is that it doesn't mean the same thing as it used to.

Because kids on the west coast are going to get up at 8amPST to watch the Vols play? Seriously, the only good thing about this is that the Vols, like 63 other teams, can say they played in a Bowl Game.

I still consider New Year's Day games and those forward (sans the ones on Jan 5-6, which are a glaring example of NCAA greed) as prestigious.

Yeah, nothing says prestige like playing a middle of the pack Big 10 team in a game sponsored by a chain of wretched steakhouses. That's what teams are shooting for when they're lifting weights and training in the offseason.

and Mike H can justify Phil's extension and raise by adding " He took us to a New Year's Bowl Game, what else could you ask for.

Agree.... this all about MH...It is a Resume' Bullet of how he did what he did serving on the Bowl Committee at the University of Tennessee...He is building a Resume for another Job outside of Tennessee... We are a stepping Stone for him and it is all about Him Not the University of Tennessee.... Look at the Renovations, dollars brought into the Athletic Department...Keeping the Piece.. He has done well...He did not care about the CPF Extension because IMO he will not be here to fix it...He can put on his resume' about the recruitment of Bruce Pearl and Hiring of him and the Changes to the Program...
