Halfcourt Trap: Preseason Accolades

Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert had their way with Hansbrough down the stretch in the tournament last year. If the officials hadn't sent the clumsy oaf to the foul line about 100 times, he would have been a total nonfactor in that game. Exactly what quality big men has he played against in the ACC? Josh McRoberts? Kevin Love would wrap that buffoon up and mail him back to the jerkwater town he grew up in.

The following does not qualify as evidence IMO:
"clumsy oaf"
"jerkwater"
"nonfactor"
"buffoon"
and especially "if"

This does (and it's just a start):
-24 and 15 against Brandon Costner
-27 and 19 against Sheldon Williams
-40 and 10 against Ga Tech combo of Smith and Dickey
-26 and 8 against Dudley and whatever other thug BC threw at him

And despite playing with a broken nose:
-33 against whoever Michigan State threw at him (I'm giving him credit for scoring 33 against an Izzo D regardless of who was on him most of the game)
-26 and 11 against Green and Hibbert (fouls are part of the game, and he made 14 of 16)

One thing I'm most looking forward to is when Sucko T takes his elbow throwing act to the League and someone like Kenyon Martin goes Kermit Washington on him. Also, what were his numbers against George Mason in the '06 tournament?

Why would I care what he did against a bad Georgia Tech team? Yeah, a big game against RaSean Dickey sells me.

Hat, I'm not trying to sell you on TH being at least a preseason All-American 3rd teamer. He already is a 2nd team All-American.

I'm trying to let you sell me on why he's a joke, and all I see is hypotheticals. I'd love to see TH take on Love or Beasley. For the record, I'll take the 2-time All-American with two years of NCAA tourney experience over two freshmen.

Michigan State had zero talent inside last year. Naymick and Suton played like a couple of 6'9" Shawn Bradleys. Gray is OK but he can't tie his shoes without fouling somebody.

I guess I'll take it that you're not going to post his numbers against George Mason. Also, I noticed you never posted what those opponents did against him. Further, I'm pretty sure UNC played Duke and State more than once in the last two years. I always let my eyes be my guide when judging players. I watched live as a totally underwhelming USC frontline handled him in the Sports Arena his freshman year. I then watched all 6'5" and 300 pounds of Jai Lewis bounce him out of the NCAA Tournament. Then, last year, when it came time to make plays at the end of regulation and overtime and the officials quit bailing him out, he was utterly hapless against Georgetown's bigs. He's just another in the long line of dopey, overhyped Carolina white guys. Serge Zwikker, Eric Montross, Joe Wolf, and Kevin Salvadori now have company.

Again, I'm not trying to sell you. I wanted you to sell me. And apparently your sales job is based around 1) three games, one of which he still ended up with a double-double in, another that was his 8th game as a collegiate, and another against a guy who had 55+ lbs and 3 years experience on him, and 2) the fact that he's of the same race and college program as a bunch of other guys (who already had each other as company, btw) who played in different decades and were coached by completely different coaches than Hansbrough's.

I also let my eyes be the judge, and although he's not as graceful as some other big men, I've seen him produce way more often than not, mostly against stiff competition. You don't like him - that's fine. But you've failed to prove that he's a "joke."

Kevin Love would have outplayed Jai Lewis when he was in the eighth grade. I don't have to sell that Sucko T is a farce created by the Carolina slurping media. When he gets to the League, his play will prove his ineptitude. As long as ACC officials continue to allow him to bullrush the lane, he'll be a moderately productive player. Everytime he plays against someone with actual skill, he'll get outplayed.

Here's the deal, Tyler flops down low and will not be a star in the NBA. He's been surrounded by some great talent, I mean, who wouldn't be successful down low with Wright there taking away some pressure. For a big guy he's a great free throw shooter and he's a pretty decent college player. I think I could find a place to put him on there somewhere, but he is somewhat overated. But I'll give him credit, he's posted some pretty good numbers which is what he should be putting up with what's surrounded with him. And remember, all of this coming from a Duke fan so I'm trying to be completely unbiased.

I have seen him play live a few times the past 2 seasons and will see him play a handful more this year. Honestly, your take on him comes as a bit of a surprise to me, so I will keep an open mind this season and see if I'm slurping the same baby blue kool-aid that the media is.

And I'll definitely keep an eye on Kevin Love, as you've sufficiently hyped him up for me.

I appreciate your unbiased attempt. I'm becoming a UNC fan as they're close by, and I just can't root for Duke (for reasons going back to when my Dad was in school). I'll also point out that one of the greatest college players ever, a star at Duke no less, did not turn out to be a star in the NBA. I've never argued whether TH would be an NBA star. I questioned Hat why he didn't put TH at least on his 3rd team preseason All-American team.

Also have to note that TH's better year of the two was his freshman year when Brandan Wright was swatting high school kids' shots in Tennessee.

Hat, how far in the tourny will IU go? I'm hate evaluations based off high school or AAU tape, but I'm sold on Gordon.

they should be able to crush most teams on their schedule and make a run into the tourney fairly deep.

their biggest concern this year will be keeping Sampson off the telephone. what a moron.
