Quote from Rainey Gaffin "We have to take what happened today and learn from it." Does anyone else see the use of this phrase ad nauseum in Tennessee sports as overkill? We have heard this over and over again, almost like it is programmed into spokespersons. Yes,losses are painful and usually more is learned in defeat as to where your team needs to improve. However, this particular phrase has become so overused by our athletes that it has become almost a rite of passage. Thoughts, anyone?

Not sure why it's something that bothers you. There isn't much to say when you lose. What are they supposed to say? "We aren't good." That's not something to worry about IMO.

Not much to learn when the other team has a better pitcher than you do. The only way you beat and compete with the best teams is through pitching it is the key in softball.

Athletes and coaches are not exactly wordsmiths. It they were, they'd probably be involved in a more intellectual pursuit than sports. There are a few rare exceptions to this rule, but most of them seem to feel that it's incumbent upon them to speak in platitudes after either a win or a loss rather than try to come up with something original and quote-worthy. That paradigm isn't likely to change any time soon.

Exactly. Even after a win you can expect Megan Geer to say, "Keeping things simple," time after time, and Erin Gabriel to say, "Not making things any bigger than what they were," On the other hand senior catcher Lexi Overstreet and freshman infielder Aubrey Leach will give some honest reply/assessment as to how they felt and things went. Remember these are athletes not philosophers.

Not that it bothers me,but so many losses with the same quote gets monotonous. It almost seems there is no thought about what happened. I would rather hear that we got our butts handed to us than something that's used so much. Just me,I guess. Thanks for your thoughts. By the way, I have played team sports(baseball, softball, and basketball) for over 60 years and have never heard this expressed in any locker room or dugout. Guess I'm just an old fogie.

"Just got to take it one game at a time" is the only one used more

Why interview the losing players anyway - stick with the coach - I dont blame players for getting upset with the stupid questions reporters ask them and really as a fan who wants hear about it anyway - this is why I didnt pile on Cam Newton, like so many others did - stupid questions dont need to be answered by players .

I actually like when the players get interviewed after a loss. Florida does the same thing. Win or lose, Florida softball players face the reporters and answer some tough questions. A player's true character gets revealed (more) in a situation like that than in a celebratory mood after a big win. Cam Newton? LOL. He's one great ball player, but...

Poor eye discipline probably caused them to lose.

Nothing could be more critical.

It's fundamental to the organization.

Eye discipline, shower discipline...these are fundamental things, an expectation that WE have as we strive for excellence in everything that we do.

We have Auburn looming. Who does Oklahoma have looming? Big difference. We need to get focused on Barners.

Auburn is going to be a huge challenge for us. The haven't lost but five games and only three in the SEC. They are tied with Florida for first place.
