GVX Rundown of the OC prospects

Good read.
Listen to the audio on that page. He mentions Legg as an intriguing prospect...as an up-and-comer. I don't see it quite that way. Marshall could have given us all we could handle this past year...so, it's not like they are a small FCS school.

I would be pumped if it were any of this group:

1) Meacham
2) Legg
3) Rod Smith
4) Canada

I think Hart is too cheap for us to go after Norvell, Mazzone or USC Trojans OC. But we should be competitive enough to land one of those previous 4.

As for Azzani...if I were Butch, I'd sit down with him and let Z know that if we weren't still in a rebuilding phase of this program, I'd be leaning toward promoting him. But this is too critical a time to risk the whole staff's job on a roll of the dice promotion.

If we go 5-7 or 6-6 again this year, all that good will and love of all things Butch Jones....turns to loathing and disdain. Just watch, if Butch doesn't knock this hire out of the park. I think DeBord or Azzani puts the staff on thin ice.

I completely agree! Especially with that top 4 you got there. Unfortunately you are correct in regards to Hart and his spending habits for staff members. We've lucked out with Butch so far, as Charlie Strong and Gundy would have been much more expensive. I don't think it needs to be a splash hire. Butch wasn't and were on the right path. All in all, I trust Butch.

This staff loves TN and meant bringing UT back to relevance. It'll be an interesting week or so.

GVX Audio: Who will be the Vols' next offensive coordinator? - GoVolsXtra Story

Interesting listen if you have 19 minutes. He makes some good arguments for why some candidates are just unlikely.

Summary:

The "Yes" Possibilty List

T.J. Weist
Matt LaFleur
Scot Loeffler
Mike DeBord
Zach Azzani

The "Maybe" Possibility List

G.A. Mangus
Matt Canada
Kurt Roper
Bill Legg
Rod Smith
Tee Martin
Walt Bell

All others were either in too good of a position or making too much money.

siap

I would like to see a guy jump up and do butt bumps with the fellas. One that energizes the kids and one that the kids get pumped up about. I dont see Debord in that role.

I happened to hear that segment of the broadcast. I was amused at their approach and it was clear they had no clue about what was going on. Treat this as you would another report from The Sports Animal, with a grain of salt.

If Butch doesn't take the OC he feels we need to do the job, I am going to be very disappointed with CBJ and the idiots that have the power to bully him. You the man bUTch, you know what you need.

I am not excited about DeBord...he did have a beast mode offensive clinic put on Urban Meyer/Charlie Strong's defense with Big 10 players though. Being it was his last game and Carr let him unleash the wide open Indy Colts scheme during the Manning years. This is a Cool Story Bro that I posted yesterday about it....still don't think DeBord is the answer though:

About the game, which the Wolverines won 41-35 after being pegged as a double-digit underdog, Carr said the two most crucial factors were the health of the team's offensive players and the plan devised by offensive coordinator Mike DeBord. The retired coach took pains to say that Michigan's offense was not a spread attack, as some players called it afterward.

He said DeBord adopted the wide-open game plan based on principles he picked up from Indianapolis Colts' offensive coordinator Tom Moore. (Peyton Manning Style) Michigan used the shotgun extensively, sometimes employing five receivers, and on occasion sent tailback Mike Hart out wide.

"That was not the spread offense," Carr emphasized. "That was nothing close to the spread offense as we know it."

The way Carr described it, the spread involves incorporating the quarterback into designed running plays, or option plays where he can keep the ball himself or hand it off to a back.

Terminology aside, the results against Florida were impressive. The Wolverines rolled up 524 yards on the Gators, the second-most-prolific output in Michigan's bowl history.

"It was just a fun thing to stand there and know that if we didn't commit penalties or turnovers we were going to score," Carr said. "I really felt that."

Let Butch be Butch. He has more information, better perspective and knowledge of who would be a good fit than all of these numb nuts keyboard cowboys and media clowns. Yes, everyone can have his say, but the one who will be fired or be successful is the one who makes the decision, given the limitations of the budget.

He may never coach here, but it has nothing to do with burning bridges. No one cares about a few butthurt fans.

I don't think its the butthurt fans, but the hs coaches that would be a problem.

We don't pay a coach purt near $4M to go no 5-7 or 6-6.
In this world you get what you pay for so Hart needs open up the check book.

I'm inclined to disagree with you here. Dopirak seemed to have quite a bit of knowledge on several of those candidates they discussed. A few hopefuls that VN members were eyeballing were simply making too much money for us to be competitive for them. The AD, unless we find out otherwise, isn't willing to open the pocket book for a money hire.
