Gut feeling on Pruitt?

There is not enough data to make any legitimate predictions. It’s all guess work.

Let 2018 and the first part of 2019 playout and you’ll have a great metric to pull from (first two season).

As far as the guess goes I have to assume mediocre to good based on our last 3 coaches with a slight uptick in win loss %.

The major differences between Pruitt and our two previous coaches is:

1. Championships and I am not talking about MAC or Big East Championships I am talking about National Championships. Pruitt may not have been the head honcho for the nattys but he was a key piece in their success.

2. Coaching pedigree. CJP has directly worked under Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt and Nick Saban. The guy has been around HoF coaches and seen how they operate. Butch never worked under anyone near that caliber and with Dooley there was just hope that he might have learned something from his dad.

3. Understanding of the SEC landscape. This is now the third program within the SEC that CJP will have been a part of. Understanding what it takes to be successful in the SEC is huge! Butch had never sniffed the SEC in coaching and Dooley only had experience as GA/position coach.

4. Development of players. How many defensive players has Pruitt put into the league? I can guarantee you the number is astronomically higher than Butch and Dooley put together. And that's just on the defensive side of the ball.

5. Recruiting. Dooley was decent, Butch was good and CJP is elite. I saw a stat yesterday that said (per 247 ratings) since 2010 UT has signed 28 players with a rating of 95+, in that same time Jeremy Pruitt has signed 27 with a rating of 95+ himself!

6. Acquiring an elite staff. Dooley's original staff was actually pretty dang good. OC - Chaney DC - Wilcox OL - Pittman. We all know of Butch's greatest staff in America with guys that we needed to spend time actually figuring out how to say their last names. So far CJP has put together a staff that has a track record of being guys that can develop players, are elite recruiters and are being sought after but other major programs!

The future with CJP is a heck of a lot brighter than Butch and Dooley even though he does not have any previous Head Coaching experience.

Frankly I’m surprised this post has only been liked twice

R...E...L...A...X.

September is a long ways away. If we're 2-2 on September 23rd, we're okay.

Anything better than 3-5 after the USCe game is a plus.

6-6 is probably the O/U, and gets us to a bowl.

9-3 not out of reason, but a stretch, so I'll settle at 7-5.

But the bottom line is bowl game = better recruiting + more practices = better in 2019, so anything 6-6 or better is good. 8-4 or better is "name your next kid Jeremy" territory.

JMO. Go Vols.

I've been really worried about the retirement of Saban and what if CJP was just getting the engine going at UT at that time. I had heard Swinney had a ridiculous buyout and did some research:

Buyout terms of Swinney's new contract | TigerNet

CLEMSON - Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney's new contract was approved by the university's Board of Trustees Tuesday morning, and TigerNet received a copy of the buyout terms.
*University Buyout: At election of University, either (a) regular payment schedule over remaining term of contract, (b) payment within 90 days, in the amount based on the year of termination per schedule as follows. No mitigation required by Coach.
2016: $20,000,000
2017: $20,000,000
2018: $18,000,000
2019: $14,000,000
2020: $9,000,000
2021: $5,000,000
----------------
Employee Buyout: Notify Director of Athletics prior to discussion to other employment.
Should Employee terminate early to accept another head coaching position or a similar collegiate athletics position, amount owed to University would be in the lump sum payment within 90 days based on the year of termination per schedule as follows:
2016: $6,000,000
2017: $5,000,000
2018: $4,000,000
2019: $3,000,000
2020: $2,000,000
2021: $1,000,000
No amount owed if Coach leaves for NFL Head Coach Position
Note: Athletic Director retains the right to waive or reduce Employee Buyout.

So Swinney's buyout is not riduculous. Now my only fear is that Swinney will say he already has his thing going at Clemson and then Bammer comes calling to Knoxville.

They’ll start their coaching search at the best available...regardless of alma mater. If Pruitt is at that level, we’re doing well.

I still don't think the powers that be care if we win or not other than achieving a bare minimum of success. Did we go big with this hire? Nope once again, UT is always looking for that diamond in the rough and so far we have gotten burned every time. I hope he is the exception rather than the rule.

Dooley's original staff was very good.

I expect the new guy to produce results in his first year. He wants to win every game. Take him at his word. That means even in year 1. Look at how hard he is recruiting junior college folks.

This guy has been around winning programs for a while. He knows what they are supposed to look like and likely triggers like a Geiger counter when he sees things that won't work. He has to fix those things.

Note: did you see the way he looked at Adams in the press conference?

He would like to fix that.

I support him as I would any UT coach but do not feel he will do very well here and will be gone after 3 years or less...I honestly hope I'm wrong and will happily eat those words if he does well...But that is my feeling.

Rival fan here.. I believe Pruitt is a dang good coach himself. I think his staff is good to great but not elite. I see a lot of talk here about power football, but look at Will Friend. He never recruited monster lines to UGA. He did very well with his smaller lines but it was mainly zone blocking schemes. Will friend's o-line often got exposed against bigger and more physical d-lines. You got to hope he has changed philosophies a bit when it comes to recruiting bigger lines. Rocker is a great coach and above average recruiter but the reason he was let go from UGA was that 2 years in a row the number 1 DT and top 3 player in the country was in his backyard and he missed on them. He pulls his share of good players though. Sherrer is a great/elite recruiter and with JP's experience you can afford a riskier hire at DC. Don't know much about Helton or the rest of your staff. I think JP's mentality is right but a little skeptical of his recruiting a ton of juco's to fill needs now. I feel that doesn't work as well as you would hope but with the 25 signing limit I also understand that he can't save scholarships for next year and was late to the party on recruiting many of this cycles players and they were either committed or hard leans. So it's a rock and a hard place situation. The landscape of the east is changing I think WM has SCAr in competitive position and he recruits well. I like what uf did with Mullen and think that mullens system is easier to teach to athletes than pruitts assumed system. Mullen just needs athletes Pruitt needs certain types at every position. So I think Mullen has success earlier and that may cause issues in recruiting and morale for the UT fanbase. Pruitt has a chance to build something but it will be a build.

Well, knowing what we know now, who would you rather have leading the Vols next season and on the recruiting trail 24/7?

Butch Jones
Greg Shi!ano
Jeremy Pruitt
Dave Doeren
Mike Leach
Mike Gundy

Pruitt out of that entire list.

I like the ole saying, "It's not the X's and the O's, but the Jimmy's and the Joe's." If he can get the Jimmy's and the Joe's consistently, then my gut says he will do fine. I'm very impressed with what they have done in a short time with recruiting.

Seems like a hard working guy.
I'll support him just like I would any new coach. But honestly, could you find more of a bubba??

Well, there William "bubba" Clinton, Bubba Watson (masters winner), Bubba Smith (actor). And, by the way, bubba is how you say "dude" on the left coast, so I dont have a problem with it. :)

This..if looks could kill. LOL

Well, we got the crumbs instead of the meal. But that's how Haslam dishes it out to us so "thank you, sir, may I have another mediocre season?".

Make no mistake, PTB have dictated where we are. Pruitt is the 'best we could do', is the mantra of those beaten down to accept the soup thrown in our cups

If that choice is CJP, it will be interesting to see if he 'honors his commitment to those kids' like he is doing with Gump or if he hauls ass to Tuscaloosa.

Bama is home for Dabo. It's also an easy transition because it's just power program to power program.

He's leaving.
