Gut check: Why Butch Jones changed call for last play

I think he should have tried the 59-yard field goal.....let Aaron Medley give it a ride.

:pepper::pepper::pepper:

To be honest I thought that was exactly how the game would end. When he missed he'd say "well he makes it from 60 in practice" but I think Butch has stopped relying on our kicker to win the game unless it's a 30 yd FG.

Well, of course he changed it. Berry's runback and the Georgia penalty put the end zone in Dobbs range. Odds of your guy catching a Hail Mary pass is around 3 or 4 to 1.

A make it up as you go lateral play? You gotta get damn lucky for it to work, and not get a penalty called.

Pretty sure you just made that up. And it's wrong.

Great, gutsy call. I love it. He laid it out on the line and let our guys make a fantastic play.

Eh, not sure how "gutsy" it was. Seemed like the only sane option.

The hailmary odds are pretty bad but I would think they're still better than trying to throw a short pass then a ton of laterals.

I know this is bluefont, but I said that we should just give it a try right at the end. I was immediately kicking myself in the @$$ in an extremely celebratory fashion.

Aaron Medley is 6 of 20 for his career from 40 yards and beyond. Never, ever put it in that kid's hands unless the kick is from 39 yards or less, and even then I think about rolling the dice on 4th down before trotting him out there, that's just the truth of it.

Bottom line, Butch stepped up and made the right call, the call that gave his team the best chance to win and it worked out great. Hope he keeps it going.

I don't think he was "thanking his lucky stars...". I think he was thanking his Lord and Savior.

I thought the exact same thing. Those weren't lucky stars he was thanking. It was God almighty.

Butch is a gutless coward. He would have run a double reverse, flea flicker deep post if he had any balls. A simple Hail Mary is just too conservative. If he continues to call plays like this, he will get beat.

If DeBored was going to call a pass with laterals play, he should be fired on the spot!

a late-afternoon sip of cognac--or maybe it was a Bud--and soaking up the atmosphere in Athens, paused in front of his ginormous "Life- and Football-Game Decisions for 9 Billion People Plus the SEC Computer," put all other matters on hold for a second, and said: "Dammit, I can't explain it, but I want Tennessee to win this football game! I've always kind of like that little ditty called 'Rocky Top.' " And, dammit, look at what happened!

And "god," feeling mellow from the cognac, didn't really care afterward that a lot of crazy religious types in georgia might be cursing him for not wanting to Georgia to win. And who can blame them? Damn, that 'god,' he's mysterious, no? I've got a call in--upstairs--to try and get some inkling of his lean for this saturday's game. :)

Tennessee coach Butch Jones fell to his knees on Saturday and probably thanked his lucky stars when the Volunteers won at Georgia on a Hail Mary pass.
Moments before the final miraculous play happened, Jones apparently changed the call from a short pass with laterals to a jump ball in the end zone.

The call of Jones life WOW

Jones was on his knees praying cause his @ss just got saved after his secondary got burned once again. Lol.

Besides the lateral crap never works. I was shocked though that he didn't try a field goal with our kicker.

One call does not erase the fact that he is conservative.

There was no other play to run, except to try and kick a field goal to tie it.

After his star running back dropped the ball and his secondary got absolutely burned, it was the only play to call and for once in this history of UT it worked.

We won. Next game up.

And a series of laterals looks like something that a desperate, no win HS teams does because the QB can't even heave the ball to the end zone.

Or just maybe if he wouldn't have ran the same play 2 out of 3 plays on the drive before we could've ran out the clock and never needed a Hail Mary
