Gun control debate (merged)

Are we back to tanks, anti-aircraft missiles, and mini-nukes for all?
at least as armed as the internal facing government.

this was one of my common sense proposals you flatly rejected. Civilian gun/weapon ownership is as restricted as the least restricted non-DoD government agency operating in the US. I don't care the CIA has a whole carrier group hiding off of the shores of Pakistan to shuttle their opium in and out. or the air force has F-22s or whatever the space force is up to. But if the IRS and CDC need armored vehicles and machine guns to govern the people the people need the same to defend themselves from an over zealous government that has ruled it has no obligation to protect its people. and has shown multiple times it doesn't give a darn about its people or making good decisions when it comes to crises and how it corresponds to people's rights.

I agree with you on their take with that particular article but I'm not familiar enough with the site to have an informed opinion. Probably worth checking out what they have on other issues as if they are consistent with the kind of depth put into that topic they may become a solid resource.

From hndog609's link (bold by me):

“Nobody who has done their homework on defensive gun use could possibly believe reading news articles accurately captures anything but an infinitesimal share of defensive gun uses,” Tomislav Kovandzic, an associate professor of criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas, told RealClearInvestigations. “The only way to measure defensive gun uses is with surveys. While there is no such thing as a perfect measure of anything, the fact that they consistently show large numbers of defensive gun uses can’t be ignored.”
The U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey indicates that around 100,000 defensive gun uses occur each year -- an estimate that, though it may seem like a lot, is actually much lower than 17 other surveys
. They find between 760,000 defensive handgun uses and 3.6 million defensive uses of any type of gun per year, with an average of about 2 million.

Does the whole "conversation" with the 'gotta do something about gun violence' crowd change with 40,000 defensive gun uses per week every week of the year?

more from hndog609's link:

Survey data indicate that in 95% of cases when people use guns defensively, they merely show the gun to make the criminal back off. Such defensive gun uses rarely make the news, though a few do.

I think this is really great news. From a personal protection aspect, you can deescalate the situation without even firing the weapon. That means no errant bullets or bystanders at risk. There is literally no opportunity for any harm in that scenario.

unless your AR just decides to shoot someone, because we have a gun problem....

They should be armed differently in different situations and have quick and easy access to heavier arms than what they carry.
sorry, that should have been, "Why" the cops need to be armed? I am wondering what circumstances they find themselves in where they experience something an American citizen doesn't.

Go exercise your rights and buy one. You’ll love it.
always felt like toys when I use them. and not in the way the 2A typically goes on about them. always feel very plastic'y, and relatively easy to break. something always rattles or shifts, and just doesn't feel as tight as I prefer. my rifle of choice can double as a club, and has a nice heft to it.

pretty much every single selling point of an AR is something I am not looking for.

Funny statement.

"Put a clip in it and let your kids play with it--they'll love it."

"Buy one for every member of your family and take a picture
of everyone holding theirs and standing around the Christmas tree--makes a great MAGA Christmas card!"

"Take it out and show it to your neighbors--let them fire off a few rounds at that homeless guy down the street. They'll be more impressed than they were when you showed them your new smoker!"

"Your wife may want to buy one and give it as a present at a baby shower. And, she can use it in the kitchen for stirring!"

"It's the perfect gift for men who live in the country and need something to do!"

You should stop your gun control argument here. You just shot yourself in the metaphorical foot. Quoted for posterity.
I was confident many would immediately jump to the simplistic yet wrong conclusion.
Take a deep breath and rethink.
