Gun control debate (merged)

For those who think that the "liberal left" cannot be reasoned with...and to a large extent I agree...this lesson from the recent past struck a note with me:

I am on the Security Team at my church. We have two levels, armed and unarmed. We use a "layered defense", starting in the parking lot and extending into the Sanctuary and anywhere that children are located. Our Team Leader is a solid Christian, and also an experienced retired federal agent. He knows what he is doing; how to defend a soft target; and how to arrange his talent. We have an SOP, and we train monthly. Sometimes it's just a walk-through, and sometimes we practice responding to a threat. We focus on the kids, or a big gun that shows up in the parking lot.

I'm on the "armed" side. We do not wear any outward sign that we are armed, but we all know who the others are, and the pastor and leaders of the Children's Ministries know who we are. We are on radios with ear mics. We meet an hour ahead of Sunday services, and assign responsibilities. For those of us on the "armed side", we are there for one thing, and one thing only. An active, armed threat. Otherwise, you get the "compression squad" while we dial 911.

A couple of Saturdays ago, we are doing a training session with our Day School staff, who run a pre-K through 2nd grade school on site. They are growing by leaps and bounds, and some day we envision a stand-alone K-6 private school. Since we cannot provide security during the school week, we are talking about what we do on Sundays, and during special events where we are present. One of our teachers, who is a really sweet lady, makes the point that she is not comfortable "being in the House of God with people with guns who are there to kill someone." She makes a compassionate, and very strong argument against us. She has two children who attend. She makes a passionate speech about love, and why she is against guns in church. I tip my hat to her. She is a good woman, and she makes a strong point.

Our Team Leader lets her finish. He stands; acknowledges the points she made; talks about what the Bible says about defending the innocent; and then ends with this: (name redacted), you have two of your children in school here, and in church here. We are not here to "kill" anyone. We are here to protect the flock. Next Sunday, if someone shows up here with a gun and enters the lobby and starts shooting at anyone in sight, who do you want between him and your children...a Christian with God on his side, or a Christian with God on his side, and a gun on his hip who is willing to lay down his life to protect your child?

You could have heard a fly fart across the street. I was waiting for the counter-argument. It never came. She knows who we are, and now she makes it a point to come up and shake our hands on Sunday. Two in a row.

Mama bear gets it.

I tip my cap to you. Much respect.

I shake my head that we have come to this.

Every time I think the Peoples Republic of California has bottomed out...they lower the bar.
I saw on the news today that SF airport is banning plastic water bottles. They've already cleared the shelves in every place there.

Correlation is not causation, but good news nonetheless. Hopefully others follow.

Well that’s counterintuitive. If removing guns drove sales up for Dicks, everyone removing guns will lower sales for Dicks. If that’s some sort of competitive advantage sector adoption will negate it. But you do you.

The company reported that net sales for the second quarter of 2019 increased 3.8 percent and consolidated same-store sales increased 3.2 percent, compared to a drop of 4 percent for same-store sales during that quarter last year.

Still in the hole in a good economy.
