I think I need a shot of Jack Daniels after reading that.

i feel like i just sat thru a lexvol therapy session.:p

in all seriousnes, i understand what he's saying. in years past, i would have been throwing tantrums during the game i saw Saturday.

Instead, this time, i just sat back, and watched. no reaction except a shake of the head and a pitiful "oh well". Hell, i didn't even have a beer in the 2nd half.

apathy is what best describes my current state of mind regarding TN football performance.

so Lex, there are some of us right there with you.

I don’t need an amateur sociologist to tell me how I should think or feel. I have simply been around long enough to know that Volunteer football is not about going through the motions. University of Tennessee football fans unequivocally deserve more than that. That is one expectation that I will NEVER lower.

Speak, brother, Speak.

I used to get wild. Last year when Crompton threw that bomb to Meachem in the LSU game my girlfriend thought I was mental cause I was highsteeping like the band leader does across the living room.

Now when we do something great like that, I sit back like Randy Quad's character on "Major League" and think, "Eh, they'll blow it in the 9th, Watch and see"

i feel like we are a bunch of old people in a nursing home waiting for the man in the black cape to come and get us. Things have become old, and we have been put in the nursing home of the SEC, talking about the good old days. GA said he needed a shot of Jack, is what we need is a shot of new life in the program. If we get a new coach, i think we need to invest in a young coach, someone that will be with us for a while, and bring back that swagger to our program.

I had to patch up the sheet rock in my first apartment because of various holes caused by my foot or fist. We even had them labelled...."here's the one where Alatorre ran into his own end zone against Ga Tech, etc. I have digressed to merely uttering expletives and glaring at the TV. I don't think I care any less, they have just worn me down.

I hear ya, Lex

OK, here's an off the wall analogy. Bear with me if you will. The 98 season and national title was the pinnacle of football. The orgasm if you will. The following couple years were the afterglow so to speak. Felt all warm and cozy. Well guess what, it's now limp and lifeless, cold and sticky. It's just what the previos comments have said. Old. The old guy bagged his young hot babe and now can't keep up. She's getting her kicks elsewhere. The program needs a good cleaning and a shot of viagara. When it happens, we don't know. But as ALL men know, once you've been there, you wanna do it again. Why this program has become complacent is beyond me, but the treatment will have to come in the form of new blood. We all know this. Fulmer is a great guy, loyal Vol, and yeah he's a really good coach. Where he seems to be falling really short is development of talent.
Sorry, I got off track there or something. You guys can figure out what I meant.

As always a great read.... Truely sums up the way I feel lately too. Just hit me like a ton of bricks when I read it.

well, there have been several mentions of having to get more sacks....maybe the analogy is pretty good.

I have been through more good times than bad with UT so I'll continue to get ticked off at the coaches and administration.Liked the ''As Good AS IT Gets" analogy. Hopefully the fire will be rekindling before too much longer.Until then :clapping:.

My wife couldn't believe it when she came downstairs in the 4th quarter and saw the score. Her response was, "Aren't you upset?" Usually she hears the emotion all the way up on the top floor of the house but it is exactly as Lex describes it now. When you have been stuck in the mud a while you lose the sense of hopeful anticipation when the car lurches forward six inches, you know it is going to slide right back.

I can relate Lex! I question myself......do I just not care anymore? Should I just lower my expectations? Are there other things I can be doing during game time? Or do I do as a heroin addict and continue to chase the dragon?

While I agree with some of what Lex was saying, I think some of the fervor wears off after two tremendous shellackings this season. We've lost all real hope this year. I suspect we'll have it back the next time that there is even a glimmer of hope of having a great season.

While we've all likely matured over the years, we would all have been throwing bricks at the TV had we been undefeated going into that game.

Quote from Lexvol's column:
"As a whole, we are watching a directionless, “soul-less” football team just go through the motions on Saturday."

I think that sums it up for me. I get mad when I as a fan seem to care more and be more emotionally "into" a game than the players playing it. I get upset at myself for investing so much time and energy and caring into a team that I know is probably going to let me down. But I keep coming back for more.

Until this past Saturday. I turned off the TV after the 3rd quater and took my dogs for a walk. Don't think I've done that before. And I'm one of the guys who's rented the pay-per-view games all season and watched them from beginning to end.

I just couldn't take it anymore against Bama.

I am heading to Knoxville on Saturday with tickets to the UT-USC game. I should be chomping at the bit and thinking of nothing else with only a few days left. But I already have a vision of me screaming my head off, cheering, hooping and hollering until I'm hoarse through 3 quarters only to have UT switch into "play-not-to-lose" mode in the 4th, get conservative, and drop the game to Spurrier.

I'm sure "true" fans out there would say - so what, suck it up, support your team even when they lose. I do support the Vols no matter what, but I find myself withholding some of the fire and emotion and becoming more detached because I'm waiting for the inevitable let-down that we've gotten used to in recent years.

Gosh, this sounds like an Oprah relationship-gone-bad story. Sorry, but that's how passionate I've always been about the Vols. Like Lex, though, my passion is waning lately.

I wonder if the Vol players themselves are going through this same kind of process. They certainly don't seem to be emotionally invested in some of these big games.

Oh well, probably over-analyzing things.

Great article Lex. A bit depressing, but great.

I know exactly how you feel.

To what CD said, I keep chasing the dragon.

I covet a team that looks sleek and fast. I long for the days when the UT offense had rhythm and could actually sack a quarterback three times in one game

This hasn't happened since 98. 99 same team underachiever's. We will never look like a well oiled machine under the current staff. They don't have it in them.

Phil Fulmer has lost this football team. Either we do not have the talent, or these players have no faith in the current system.
I Believe this to be true. Watch a replay of the outback bowl last year. Watch as heffney totally ignore's phil as he walks away from him, when phil is actually jawing at him. Total lack of respect, thats a big problem with this whole team.

This football team needs leadership on the sidelines, and on the field
A huge problem. I never see anyone on our defense getting fired up after someone has just marched the length of the field and scored. We used to have some guys that would chew some butts, were is the heart.

I hear exactly what your saying lex. I'am like you it sucks to get kicked in the nuts by your two biggest rivals.
