Guitar Shots: The QB Situation

The offensive outlook in Tennessee is not a pretty picture right now, especially at QB. Poor QB recruiting only makes it look worse for Vols fans. We need a quick fix and there is no relief in sight. All we can hope for now is that this new staff can perform a miracle and turn our underachieving QBs into field generals.

We need a game manager.

I'm not ready to call this poor QB recruiting quite yet, and think that if we find a game manager that these recruiting issues will just be a blip.

I really think Crompton will be markedly better this year. I think he's more confident and fits with this new system a little better. I wouldn't be completely shocked if he becomes somewhat of a star this year.

Since it doesn't look like we'll be getting a stud QB for a year or so, I wonder if this will factor into Stephens taking over. If he's on par with Crompton, I'd be tempted to let him have the reigns to prepare us the next couple of years.

We may have to settle for a 'game manager' type of QB for a couple years and lean on a strong running game. We've had success in the past with lower profile QBs...Alan Cockrell, Andy Kelly, etc. We'll likely bring in a couple of decent prospects this year which will keep the door wide open for a top 2011 prospect which I understand may include a couple of Tennessee kids in the mix.

It's tough scraping yourself off the bottom which is pretty much where we are at this point.

What I don't understand is besides BJ, where was Cutcliff's recruiting? Being the 'QB genious' given the turnaround he did for EA why was BJ the best and only prospect he could bring in?

Regardless of the paper rankings of a couple of classes our recruiting efforts under Fulmer was just pitiful the last few years. Too many of his staff appeared to slide on recruiting and too many areas of the team were allowed to seriously decline...Dline, Oline, RB, WR, QB.

It's the late '70's all over again accept perhaps worse as the SEC is a lot tougher now and there's no 'Johnny comes marching home' excitement.

Every time I get excited about football season coming up, I think about Jonathan Crompton and the excitement turns to dread.

Good read, as usual, Lexy.

What happened to the days when Tennessee was recruiting so many qbs some were going elsewhere because the competition was too stiff, like Brandon Stewart and Chris Sims? :cray:

Lex, I'd settle for a hander offer. Just watched the Auburn replay last night, I'm still pissed.
