The Steelers.

Fresh off my trip to the 'burgh for the Broncos game i can honestly say this team is just bad.

they are as undisciplined an NFL team as i have seen in quite some time, and definitely the most undisciplined Steeler team i've seen in a long, long time.

It's not all Ben. he's a part of it...but he's not THE only thing wrong with this team.

there's no running game. they are careless with the football even when they do something good--See cedrick wilson and hines ward both fumbling inside the 5 on potental scoring receptions.

the defense is wildly overrated...specifically the secondary. minus Troy P. the rest of them, can't cover a lick.

the offensive line is no where near as good as it was a year ago, and the special teams is pathetic. Holmes literally got booed out of the stadium...and they showed Cowher on the sideline asking Cecric Wilson, after Holmes' second fumble, if he could stand back there and catch?

they remind me of us last year...and one has to wonder if Cowher has gotten complacent. i'm not saying he should be fired, but the issues they have...turnovers, penalties, special teams....eh-hem, that's coaching.

can't wait for the Steeler/Panthers game that i just had to have tickets for....that sould be a real great game!:thumbsup:

He was like our Al Wilson of 98 last year, he held the team together , he was the emotional glue that brought it all together. and yes jake they just plain suck this year Cowher needs to kick butt and take names or what ever pro coaches do to motivate teams.

there may be something to that, but Bettis has nothing to do with coverage, penalties, turnovers etc....leadership plays a part in all that yes, but it's not like there aren't any other leaders on that team...Porter, Ward, Ben (yes, Big Ben), Faneca etc...
they just flat out aren't getting it done. end of story.

Joey Porter can get guys fired up, Hines Ward is a class guy who sets a great example, Big Ben is a young player with a great attitude, and Alan Faneca is a venerable lineman. But none of them are the complete leadership package emboddied in one guy like Bettis was. Even through my dislike of the Steelers, and even though I'm still miffed about the Super Bowl, Bettis was one of those guys I just fully respected.

Yeah, there are plenty of others left on the team with great character qualities. But none of them are as effective as the Bus was.

Not saying the Steelers weren't good, but I'd say quite possibly the luckiest team ever to get through the playoffs. I know I've said it over and over again, but translating it to this season, people are holding the Steelers to their "defending Super Bowl champs" status, which IMO is wrong. The Steelers were never that good, say as the Patriots have been through recent years.

I also think the loss of Antwaan Randle El can't be overstated. He did more for that offense than anybody realizes, it's like they were running a two QB system at any given time.

winning 3 games on the road as a 6 seed is hardly luck. and as miffed as anyone can be...when you are the 6 seed and you have to play 4 straight on the road and you get it done, against the competition they had to do it against....yeah, you need a ball to bounce your way, but you have to take care of business too. that whole "it was just luck" doesn't hold water. if the steelers weren't a good team last year, they wouldn't have won it all. end of story.

and i don't disagree with you about Bettis. that guy meant a ton to the team and organization. I just can't say that's THE reason for this year's collapse. yeah, they miss the locker room presence. but at some point, these guys have to go play, with or with out Bettis. he's not the reason.

As for randle el...i tend to agree. he wasn't a huge part of the offense, from a % standpoint, but his element in that offense gave them options they don't have right now.

for me it comes down to a couple of things:
1. the offensive line has regressed greatly.
2. the secondary is finally showing how bad it is. it's been the dirty little secret of that defense for a couple of years now.
3. Deuce Staley has proven to be a non factor and a terrible free agent pick up.
4. no deep threat at wr.
5. where's heath miller???? bueller, anyone? he had one play in the MIA game and that's it.
6. Special teams....turnover ciy.
7. Willie parker has great speed. which doesn't matter when you run in to the back of the Oline every other play.

ok, that' smore than a couple, and truth be known, i could go on.

and at the end of the day, Bettis's presence being missed is not the cause of ALL of those issues.

Should be an even matchup... The Steelers can probably still out-physical the Saints, but that Pittsburgh secondary is pretty weak and Drew Brees is a damned good QB.

And if worse comes to worse, the Saints could guilt trip the Steelers. Who would mug mother Teresa?

If Jake plummer can have the day he had against the steeler d, drew bees surely can.

that said, i wouldn't be surprised one bit if the steelers won, convincingly, and we were all left, as steeler fans, here scratching our heads going 'where the hell did that come from?'

well, seeing as how the Panthers are still "in it" so to speak, the steelers winning won't necessarily help themselves, but it helps the panthers...so i'll be rooting for it nonetheless.

well, they didn't suck completely for once. the offense got rolling and fast willie parker proved once again why he has that nick name...

the defense is absolutely awful though. they can't defend the past one bit and 3rd downs are almost unbearable to watch when they're on D.

on the plus side, the NFC south played itself back to the Panthers over the weekend...let's see if Carolina can get a W and peek their head back in this thing...

agree about Brees...i've alwasy thought he was a pretty darn good qb. but the defense for the steelers has gond from STEEL CURTAIN, to aluminum foil.
