well looking at the phil fulmer thread made me look up the past national championships. According to this site, Tennessee has 8, but the hard thing is counting Southern Cals national titles i would have to say they have close to 20 or so; and it makes me think what are some of the voters of these polls smoking: USC '05, OU '03, OSU '98, & FSU '96. It just shows that theres only one way to determine a consensus national champion...and its by letting them play it out

yea i know we have four i was just saying how weird the system is for deciding a national champion is. its like the coaches poll, were spurrier always puts duke in the top 25, im just saying that somehow all polls should reflect a single national champ

The football team also recognizes 1940 and 1967 as National Championship seasons. There are six national title banners in Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex.

However, I agree that the answer should be four.
