Gruden?

You get any more info besides the prepared script last night?

We know Slice isn't getting anywhere. Not with a name like Richard.

One of my guys texted me a minute ago and simply said that there is a lot of chatter on campus.

Nobody knows chit...but everybody knows something is up.

Timing makes sense if they are going w/ an interim. It will clearly salvage attendance for the SC game.

All I know is....THIS IS AWESOME!

He won a Superbowl in his first year in TB with a roster that was mostly intact when he got there. His overall NFL HC record is 95-81 or .540. That's not awful for the NFL, but it is not exactly gang busters. Belichick is .673 overall and .739 in New England. Andy Reid is .608 overall, both having coached far more games than Gruden. Mike Tomlin is .644, having coached roughly the same number of games. In fact, there are 18 active HCs in the NFL with a higher career winning percentage than Gruden.

He has never ran a college program. He hasn't coached AT ALL at the collegiate level in 28 years. He's just going to walk in and start winning? There's more to it than X's and O's. He has to recruit. He has to run the program. He has to deal with the NCAA rules and regulations, etc.

I am not saying he can't be successful, but, IMO, he's at least as big of a risk as many of these "up and comers" that so many seem to be afraid Tennessee is going to hire.

And Nick Saban was 15-17 (0.468) with the Miami Dolphins.

Steve Spurrier was 12-20 (0.375) with the Redskins.

Yeah, I'd have turned both of them away as well because of their NFL record....

Some people really need to realize that NFL does not equal NCAA.

And if you doubt his knowledge of the game, or passion of the game, the way he sees plays, the way he plans, and the way he suggests adjustments (most of which we do not have now), then sit back Monday night and just listen to his comments. He has a very, very high football IQ and would be able to game plan like no one we have had before. Plus, you have the added benefit of working in the NFL, you have to delegate and not micromanage...he would bring in top staff members and let them do their thing.

And regarding recruiting.....he is a household name:
1. Superbowl Ring
2. MNF
3. QB Camps
4. Football breakdown segments on ESPN
5. Staff would be (as it usually is) the primary recruiters.

He is well-known and well-revered throughout the football community. Everyone knows who he is who has anything to do with football...

Saying all that, I do not think he will ever really be in the picture and will never coach here...but to say he would not be a homerun hire is just short-sighted.

Even though I feel like I am 9 yrs old again, and hunting for snipe .....

I will say this wild goose chase is a lot more fun. Grude morning everyone.

Yep...these threads are a lot more fun than having nothing but 41-0 beat downs to discuss.

In all seriousness, might Jon Gruden still be interested in coaching at UT? He said in 2015 that "Tennessee is a dream job for a lot of people, me included," but that the "timing wasn’t right" back in 2012.

Jon Gruden calls Tennessee dream job, says Butch Jones is 'right guy'

Well, maybe the timing's right now. John Currie should pick up the phone and gauge Gruden's interest. It would be a legendary hiring if it happened.

Do you know what Gruden's NFL record was? 95-81.

Oh FFS! Can we stop with this please? Gruden works 1 day a week and doesn't need the money.

If you are thinking he really only works 1 day/week, you do not listed to him. He studies these teams, the players, the strategies. When you listen to him on MNF, this is not a guy just reacting to the last play. He knows what is going on and he discusses game plan, etc.

He also has a lot to do with personnel/individual breakdown segments, QB camps, etc.

The man has said in the past that his prep for MNF is days and days. He hardly ever sleeps. He lives and breathes football.

It is like a broken record:

And Nick Saban was 15-17 (0.468) with the Miami Dolphins.

Steve Spurrier was 12-20 (0.375) with the Redskins.

Yeah, I'd have turned both of them away as well because of their NFL record....

If they fire him before USC and an interim announced that should have been last Sunday.

I’m not opposed to it I guess but what’s all the hype about? His career record as a coach is 100-85 that’s not good. Chip Kelly could win in college but couldn’t in the NFL. Gruden couldn’t win in the NFL other than 1 fluke Super Bowl win so what makes us think he can win in college?

I know he could probably attract big time assistants because he’s popular, and he’s a self proclaimed QB guru that can break down plays pretty well but I just don’t see much else. I’m not knocking the idea at all guys anything is better than what we have. I just wanted to know if I’m missing something?

Anybody that can pull off that hairstyle has got to be a great coach

I posted the gist of this in the Finebaum thread, but I wanna say it again in the Gruden thread!

I was soooo on board with the Gruden hire last time.

We didn't have internet at the house at that time, and I couldn't use up my data on my phone, so after work, I'd take my laptop to the local gas station, and sit in my car, using the wifi at the gas station, reading each and every post in the Gruden thread. The next morning, I'd go to work early and get on the company computer and read til the bosses came in and it was time to get to work.

This Gruden thing has me excited about Vols football again - I just got this feeling that it's gonna happen this time. Peyton and Currie are gonna get this done! (... at least I hope so)

You guys keep posting, I'll keep reading, and when the time comes, we're gonna have a Big Orange Celebration!

Soon.

I get that this a forum that you get to talk about whatever you want football related, but for Christ sake can we talk football and not how bad Butch is and who we think should be our next head coach?

What are some of the biggest things you want to see improve for the USC game? (besides coaching... I get it)

Personally for me it's offense, offense, and.... offense.

I want to see some QB play that we haven't seen all year. Give JG the start, what's the worst that can happen?

I want to see some deep passes to WR in stride, I also want to see said WR catch the ball. No drops next week.

I want to see our OL destroy SC DL and Kelly get about 200 yards on the ground.

Have you looked at Harbaugh and Spurrier NFL records. How about Chip Kellys short time in the NFL. The NFL records are very deceiving, very few coaches have great NFL records. Just look them up. GBO!!!! SOON!!!!!
