Greg Clark - 2010 DT Signee....

Did Greg Clark redshirt this past year. He signed late last year and he's listed at 300 lbs, you would think we could have used all able bodies at the DT postion this year. I was just thinking I didn't hear anything about him this year and nobody seems to be mentioning him in their future depth charts for next year? Is he just a career scout teamer or does anybody think he might play some next year? I'll hang up and listen...

Had to rehash 6 pages of last year just for someone to ask did he redshirt and someone answer yes. Seems like it coulda been a fresh thread for that.

Just saw this on the wikipedia page for Montari.
Jamie Newberg of Scout.com later admitted that recruiting services overlooked: "Right now, to me, he may be the best prospect in the state when it’s all said and done. And we just flat missed him."

Does this happen a lot??? Another reason not to trust the "Star system".

Well, you could have looked at the date of the OP, then scanned the last couple of pages of the thread to see which posts were from the last couple of days. Took me 10 seconds to find it.

Anyway, I haven't heard his name mentioned any for the upcoming season either. Wonder if Larry can shed any light...

I wouldn't count on having much impact in 2011. still trying to get into physical condition. spring will be his chance to show if he can be a factor.

linemen do much better long term, if they don't play much the first couple years and spend more time maturing physically. Clark needs that more than most but if team could afford that approach with all in coming linemen would be best approach to success.

Nick Fairly - 3 star guard that most of you guys would have hated when he committed. Wish we had him.

Yes. It happens alot. You can usually count on the guys they give high ratings to being talented. OTOH, you can't say that just because a kid doesn't get "stars" he isn't talented. The systems they use aren't even set up to catch all the future great players. If it were then they would not arbitrarily limit the number of guys who get 4/5*.

They use as much objective data as they can find but the difference that makes one kid a 5.7 3* and another a 5.8* 4* is mostly subjective- "I think one kid has better vision, That guy played better competition, He will be able to carry more muscle,..."

Sometimes the difference can be how well edited a recruit's highlight video is or if they even sent one in. Hughes IIRC didn't attend any camps. The recruiting svcs go heavily off camp performances (their rating accuracy took a hit a couple of years ago when they changed the rules on taking "measureables"). Sometimes it can be the difference between what a kid claims about his 40 or weight lifting compared to reality.

Sometimes it is simply geography. While realizing the south and Texas are hot beds, the recruiting svcs want to sell magazines elsewhere too. If they "need" a 4* in Pa then that could keep a kid in GA a 3*.

Either approach is OK with me. Thanx for asking the question & thanx to Larry for answering it. :hi:

I think that the sentiment is that dooley is looking more in the rough than kiffin did.

Not so sure about that, I heard that one of the Kitten clan really liked it rough in his office..... At least she did while Lame was at practice.. Strictly a rumor though..

Great; another negavol blinded by a flawed recruit ranking system that has proven itself to be a steaming pile of horse crap over the years, calling for the head of a coach that hasn't called a single in-game down at our school yet.

I am not for wanting anybodys heads to role at this point ...we do need to give the coach 2-3 seasons. However , I disagree with your comment. No 'star' system is perfect ..nor does it guarantee success . If you look at the top teams in the country , they are usually recognized in the prior years as top recruiting teams ...by that same 'star' system. That system does not guarantee success ..but in most cases is a very reliable indicator of which teams have success.

I think what alot of the detractors are saying ...the #25 recruiting class in the nation does not usually translate into a championship football teams ...which if you look back ...is true.
-
We need to be in the top 10 in the country just to compete in the SEC ( top recruiting teams : LSU , Bama , UF , Auburn and USC jr are making pushes in recruiting , The Hogs are too ) . These teams are ranking well up there in the recruiting wars ...and they are also winning ...they are elite.
-
If you want to site anomolies like Boise State and Va Tech ...go ahead ...but they are the exception rather than the rule. We need to be up there with our conference sisters who are big time recruiters and championship contenders.

May or may not be interesting or relevant to this thread, but I saw Clark's parents' (I assume) car the other day while driving. Two huge Power T's on the back with Clark written inside one of them. He is from my local area.

lineman are the hardest thing to scout out of high school IMO.

if you are 6'3 300lbs in high school and aren't a one man wrecking crew, something is wrong.

of kids in high school who are 270-300 pounds--and the vast majority are overweight, not fit, and have no athleticism. If someone is 300 pounds and halfway fit, and motivated, then, yea, they can wreck--but most big high-school kids are just overweight. We'll see if this guy is a football player or not soon enough...
