Greg Amsler vs Derek Barnett

Dang that's 2 nasty Vols right there. Amsler was a classic battering ram type FB. I can't imagine him and Barnett colliding head on?

One of the things that is false about DB is that he was an "Edge Rusher". Yes, he did that extremely well. But DB was a nasty football player who player with some of the best leverage and power of any player his size I've ever seen. His run stopping ability was at LEAST as good as his pass rushing. Amsler might truck him, but I doubt it seriously.

I have to go with Amsler with no disrespect to Barnett. The rules at the time Barnett played discouraged the hitting guys like Amsler dished out. Put Amsler in a game during Barnett's time? The refs are going to find a reason to eject him.

Barnett was an edge rusher. Amsler would run between the tackles. They wouldn't match up at the goal line often. Now, give me John Henderson vs Greg Amsler and we'll have something.

For sake of this argument...Amsler would truck Barnett if they met head-to-head. Momentum would carry him into the end zone.

Even though Barnett played defense and Amsler offense...Amsler played with more physicality than Barnett.

My money is on Amsler..

Amsler was a great North-South runner, and once he got any momentum he was difficult to stop, but I don't believe he played with a greater level of physicality than Barnett.

Barnett was a great ball player. The majority of the big plays he made weren’t because of his physical style of play...yet his quickness and get off. I’ll take Amsler in a goal line drill.

I don't think that's a fair ask of a primarily pass rushing defensive end.

How about Bituli vs Amsler? Bituli had some weaknesses but I never saw him give ground on the goal line.

All I know is when we would throw that little swing out pass to Amsler coming out of the backfield, it was $$ and whoever had the unenviable task of tackling him might do better trying to get their arms around a bulldozer.

No one really knows for sure.
But by comparison, Jalen Hurd also won a goaline matchup against Barnett in fall of 2015 practice.

Amsler and Hurd had a similar playing style

Greg couldn't play in today's game. He was too rough

The rules are really one-sided. Amsler would flourish.

The offense is totally protected except for hands to the face and offensive pass interference. Clipping.
But as a RB you can lower your helmet and shoulder pads and run right through someone. And they will get a penalty if they try to do the same. It's really not fair...

I didnt grow up in that period, but in goal line drill a 240 pound player isnt beating a 270 pound player, unless there is a big difference in muscle mass or the defense is soft. I dont think Barnett is either. Gimme Barnett. Amsler may "score" just based on momentum but thats it. No ones getting trucked.

That's a tough matchup. I think Barnett would do better tackling Amsler in the open field than on the goal line so I'm going with Amsler

Amsler would truck Derek. Reggie would eat Amsler. Who's better?
