greetings from UCLA

Make sure you get into the stadium in time to see the bands pregame show too. You don't want to miss seeing the team running through the T (even if you are a UCLA fan).:p

I have very seldom seen a TN fan get into a fight with an opposing fan unless one or both are three sheets to the wind and somebody starts talking serious trash...

Best advice....get out early Friday night if you want a table anywhere.

If you plan to tailgate stake your area out early as well. You are much better off and will have more fun if you just find an established tailgate to party with.

On a serious note, bring your own tofu

AND take into consideration that while Knoxville is in the Eastern time zone, it is on the Western end of that time zone so the entire game should occur during daylight hours. The temp. may drop late afternoon but it won't mean a thing if your seat is exposed to the setting sun. Figure out where your seat is and dress appropriately. That, or just carry around a bunch of layers of clothes that you may or may not need.

If you see nothing else get there to see the team running through the "T". The absolute finest tradition in college sports.

do yourself a favor and don't walk back to the hotel if it's real late.. spend the $5 and take a cab... that area used to be safe to walk through at all hours... there has been some crime in the last few years...
What is this cab service that is only $5? I've never gotten a cab in Knoxville because I assume it's $20. Also the fort being dangerous has gotten overblown as late, but I've had my bad experience so maybe this is sound advice.

a ride from the strip to the sheraton shouldn't be more than $5-10, should it? I haven't used a cab in years, so I don't know... we walked through the fort for years with no problems... sounds like it's different now.

A group of guys walking around The Fort shouldn't have any issues. If you are alone I'd just be alert.

Half barrel is my personal favorite. Solid drink specials from 4 to 10 everyday. (2.50 wells, dollar off premiums, dollar off all beers, and a special 2 dollar pint of the day). and the best 25 cent wings you can imagine.

Else downtown and the Old City are the way to go, but I say stay near campus just to see the sheer amount of orange on Gameday.

when I came to UT, I had been a life long hater. about a week into my freshman year, I turned into a hardcore fanatic. UT has that effect on people.

Have fun. and have a sense of humor. (and the fort is safe)

Not sure if this is still the case, but if you want to see the opposing team on Friday night they used to go to the Foothill Cinema movie theatre in Maryville. I remember seeing the whole Florida team back in the 90's one Friday.

good location. Their bar is ridiculously overpriced for this area though, so definitely head down Cumberland to the more "authentic" local fare.

I agree... Interesting note: Peyton Manning is a part owner of that hotel.

You are just a 10 minute walk from the stadium. Be sure to get there 1:45 before game time for the VOL WALK. Trust me, it will be VERY EASY to figure out when it's about to happen. ;)

Immediately after that, carry your 12-pack down near Gate 21 to check out the band, salute to the hill and the kick-off call-in show.

This is what "gameday" is all about at Tennessee. :dance2:

If you get a chance, go down by the river and check out Calhoun's and the VOL NAVY.

Have fun, man! :rock2:

I watched "Independence Day" with the Alabama football team in foothills cinema in 1996. I could smell their fear.

I will give you an example about the heat.

September 14, 1991 UT vs UCLA

Heat index on the field - 120 degrees

Players from both sides vomiting on the field and having to come out the game due to heat exhaustion.

Smokey the dog literally passed out from heat exhaustion. He was listed on the injury report when it was released that week. Smokey - heat exhaustion.

For the first time in history, UT band members were allowed to remove their heavy band jackets during a game. They were playing Rocky Top in their t-shirts. Too many were passing out from the heat while in their seats.

First and only time I have ever gotten sunburned at a football game. I was in Section X about 25 rows up. I'm fairly dark skinned and rarely burn. My face and the tops of my legs had some serious sunburn.

Go here and look up your seats. It will give you a field view. Look at the comments section, and it will tell you what to expect as far as sun/shade in your seats.

check out The Carousel on White Avenue just off Cumberland. It is right behind the law school. Hottest women in town

Friday night try the bars on the Strip or in the Old City. Strip is certainly a younger crowd, but good scenery.

Gameday, have drinks on the deck at Calhoun's and then work your way down the river to the stadium. There's tailgating on the other side of the road, as well, and almost all Vols will share their libations with you (as long as you aren't wearing Gator gear).

Vol Walk a couple hours before the game is an experience, fun even for outsiders.

here's a great map of campus area

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tenn/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/09fb-parking-map.pdf

campus, Neyland, and the river are obvious. the strip is Cumberland Ave (70/11), downtown and old city are upper right hand corner, other side of world's fair park. your hotel is right above "11th street parking garage" and the UT police as noted on the map.

we tailgate in G10, come on by. PM me closer to gametime for more accurate directions.

Go Vols!

PS - I had a great time at the Rose Bowl last year!

Welcome to Tennessee, Bruin. Hope you leave like your Cal counterparts though. We owe you one.
