A group of 6 of us will be flying in for the game Friday afternoon until Monday morning. I ‘ve had some sweet experiences at some of our past away games, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Alabama are some of my favorites, but I hear game day at UT is one of the best. I am hoping for a few tips from some real football fans as far as where to go game day, Friday night, post game etc to get the best experience. At the Rosebowl we tailgate, period. I am assuming you guys can tailgate and/or hit the bars/restaurants. Where/When are the best spots, best times? Any and all tips and suggestions are appreciated. Looking forward to 9/12/09, and good luck with your season.

Alot depends on where you are staying...

Tailgaiting best spots are either Fraternity row, The Strip, or if you can weasle your way onto a boat Calhouns down on the river(overall best spot by far.)

Also depending on your age I could give you some reccomendations on nightlife!

You definitely don't want to leave your liver at home. Check out the river area before the game.

Buy two or three big bottles of Jack Daniel's. Show up early afternoon down at the Vol Navy next to the stadium and be friendly. Pretty much a guaranteed great afternoon.

No matter what age you cant beat the $1 drinks at the Roaming Gnome on The Strip from 9-10! I would start there Friday night for sure. The scenery is usually top notch as well.

Tailgating pretty much starts gameday morning, maybe a bit later if it's a night game. If you're plainning on visiting a few establishments, avoid campus and go downtown.

If u want fun college bars, cool beans and hannahs. Both easy to find right on campus basically.

The parade of the UT Band into the stadium is a can't-miss for a first-timer to Neyland, IMO.

You can beat $1 drinks at Roaming Gnome by not being a cheap ass and going somewhere that isn't a complete pain in the :censored: to move around. However the patio is good but I've got a feeling the line to get out on it might not be worth it after a game.

Weezy, calm down big guy. Some people (me) are on a budget and $1 drinks are great. Of course there are better places to go but where else can you have that good of a time on $10????

As far as restaurants go, I recommend Calhouns. The Copper Cellar is another good place.

Like others have said, tailgating usually starts pretty early in the morning on gameday.

good location. Their bar is ridiculously overpriced for this area though, so definitely head down Cumberland to the more "authentic" local fare.

One thing you should be prepared for is the heat, since it's a 4 pm game. There's a reason we usually try to play most of our September games at night. The humidity will be brutal compared to what you're used to in California. Dress accordingly.

Calhoun's is packed and fun on gameday, but the food itself is nothing special IMO. It's fine, but just don't expect it to be great barbecue. I make better ribs myself.

The parade of the UT Band into the stadium is a can't-miss for a first-timer to Neyland, IMO.

This is absolutely true. We brought some northern girls up from Atlanta for a game last year, and they couldn't stop talking about it. "I had goosebumps for 10 minutes and I don't even care about Tennessee!"

just be nice and you'll get all the southern hospitality (food/strong drink) that you can handle...calhoun's and the vol walk are must do's for first timers. we are generally welcoming to other fans unless they are wearing blue and orange or crimson.

I'd recommend OCI/Taproom or somewhere Downtown/Old City for Friday night or Saturday night. Check out Calhoun's, Copper Cellar, Downtown Grill & Brewery for meals. Tailgating is great anywhere on campus close to fraternity row or the stadium or on the river.

the sunspot on cumberland avenue and also old college inn are good.. gameday will be insane everywhere except off-campus... the long branch saloon on campus is a little off the beaten path (it's right on cumberland, just not as crowded) and is a good place to get away from the 4-deep bar scenes at gnome, cool beans, etc.

ye olde steak house on chapman hwy might be a good spot for a meal on friday or sunday night... great steaks

imo, sundays after gamedays are a nice time for a couple of brews... still a few people around, but not insane like saturdays... old college inn has a nice patio and the tin roof (or whatever the old o'charley's is going to be) also has a nice patio..

do yourself a favor and don't walk back to the hotel if it's real late.. spend the $5 and take a cab... that area used to be safe to walk through at all hours... there has been some crime in the last few years...

toddy's backdoor is a ut landmark... 3 miles west of campus on kingston pike(cumberland)
