Greatest Vol you ever saw play or met.

In 1986 I worked at Ingles Market in Farragut. Doug Atkins came in and I talked with him for about 5 minutes. IMO he is the greatest Vol.

It seems like overall best from everybody would be Doug Atkins.

Well, he was voted Best Player in the SEC for the quarter century from 1951-1975. Also, to to Youtube and watch some of those old films. A lot of folks in the NFL were scared to death of this guy. A dominating player for many years in the NFL.

Played intramural basketball against a team comprised of Little Man Stewart, Aaron Hayden, Charlie Garner, Nilo Silvan, Carl Pickens, Ronald Davis and Cory Fleming. We hung with 'em for a half (we were down by two) but we were gassed. They destroyed us in the second half and went up by 30 (the limit) with about a minute left.

I went after a loose ball with "Little Man". I did not end up with the ball! :)

I met one of Traivs Henrys kids....At least i think so, hes got like a bakers dozen so maybe :)

Johnny Majors, Bill Bates, Bobby Scott and John Ward.

I saw Bobby Scott at Pat O'Brien's while in New Orleans for the '86 Sugar Bowl which was my freshman year on the Hill. I spoke to him and brought up the fact he was the last QB to take the Vols to the Sugar Bowl. He invited me to sit down and bought me a hurricane.

Bagged groceries at Food City for Pat Summitt when I was in high school. Took her stuff out and she was parked in the fire lane, hopped in her car and started up and left me there to load bags and suck fumes.

Had Jay Graham as a biology lab partner in school. Seemed like a nice guy the 2 times he showed up for class.
My opinion of Pat as a person is pretty low. She almost ran me over in a parking lot once and I literally had to jump out of the way. In hindsight, I should have let her hit me because I'd be pretty rich right now.

I went to the UT- Bama game in Birmingham in...'81 or ''82. Willie Gault and Reggie White were on that team I think. All time great Vols for sure. Actually, I went to two consecutive UT- Bama games in Birmingham at that time. I was just a kid so I don't remember everyone who was on that team.

I met Casey Clausen & Cedric Wilson one Sunday when a bunch of the players were at East Town mall getting ready to watch a movie. I got lucky and met Tyler Smith at Best Buy during Christmas, and that same year I met Pearl at the Airport. All them players were awesome to meet but, meeting Coach Fulmer in 2001 IMO was the top of the mountain. I couldn't believe how nice and open coach Fulmer was, to me and my friend. He talked with us for a good 15 mins. As far as the best I've ever seen play in football would be Peyton & Big Al Wilson. In basketball it would be Allan Houston & Chris Lofton. Go Vols!

Bobby Scott
Curt Watson
Bobby Majors
Hacksaw Reynolds

Played rugby with Art Reynolds, Mike Mohrman, and Craig Puki.

Man, so many great players have stepped on Shields-Watkins Field since I went to my very first game in 1987.

Obviously, Peyton is right up there. I saw every home game that he, Heath Shuler, and Tee Martin played in. Several road games, too. Carl Pickens, Alvin Harper, Donte Stallworth, Peerless Price...I could go on. I'd almost have to break it down by position, as I seem to have to started to. Lol. We had so many great players from the late 80's through the mid 2000's, it's hard to think of them all and pick a favorite.

As for guys I've met? I've run into several players, either by VOL Walk, or seeing them get off the bus at road games. I ran into Casey Clausen before the 99 Notre Dame game, as he was on a recruiting visit that night. Saw Erik Ainge at Jersey Mike's after the 2004 Florida game.

Most of the times I've run into players like that, I was already as old or older than them, so I kinda had respect for their space and also it just didn't seem right to run up to them and get a signature or something.

I also ran into Condrege Holloway at the bar at Copper Cellar years ago.

I know that's a long rambling post about nothing, but the topic got me reminiscing. Sorry. Lol.

Peyton. Summer class. One of his first college classes ever. I remember him (freshman) greeting me (sr) at the door. Kind of cool he was that confident even at the beginning of his time at UT. You could tell then he was going to be good, just meeting him.

Also, ran 40's with Reggie White at an FCA camp. He was with Philly at the time. This was a sobering experience and end to my NFL dreams as I was one of the fastest guys on my H.S. football team as a middle linebacker. I was around 10 yards into my sprint and Reggie was about 20 yards ahead of me. I knew then, I needed to get an education.

I am lucky to be friends with a couple of others, but won't mention names due to the awkwardness of me posting their names.

Once saw Rod Wilks and Paul Bain walking towards each other from opposite directions. I fell into a coma before I could ask for autographs.

Jason wittens the only player or coach I've ever met he came to watch Elizabeth play in mountain city signed my shirt and hat(neither of which were ut gear)it was really cool the only thing he said was you must be cold(I had on a sleeveless shirt)I've lost the shirt and hat since

I helped recruit Chip Kell and worked with his mother. I was surprised he was as short as he was.

Me too.Iam about 6.4 and 300 lbs and dwarfed him.I know he was a great player but I figured he would be much bigger from all the story's I have heard about him over the years.Kinda like the Road House movie.I thought you would be bigger than that.

Reggie White. Met him when I was 8 years old at the church my Mom took me to. Him and Willie Gault were the only 2 guys I remember. There were several others there. Didn't have anything for him to sign, so he signed a sheet of paper that I have to this day along with Willie and 2 other guys. Super nice guy that gave me a great childhood memory.

In undergrad (83-86) I used to go to Aquatic Center, work out and run on the track - was down there a lot during track practice, and went to a couple meets too

Olympic Gold medalist Ralph Boston used to work with sprinters Sam Graddy and Terry McDaniel, and hurdler Jeff Powell was also there...

Sam Graddy was ahead of Carl Lewis at 50 meters in the 1984 Olympics, he ultimately took the silver medal in the 100, and won a gold in the 4 X 100 relay.

Terry McDaniel was blazing, pretty sure he won the SEC 100 meters...

The first time I saw Jeff Powell he was doing hurdle drills, he looked like he was poured out of granite, and said he had transferred from William & Mary and was going to play football...

Anyway...what a great thread

Peyton #1 - GOAT at highest level so no surprise there.
I was also extremely fortunate to meet Reggie White back when I was on the UT varsity team (in another sport). Our coach once brought Reggie to our locker room before we played the Dawgs to give us a pep talk. Reggie told us he used to tell the opposing QB's that Jesus is coming for them to make sure to push himself as hard as he could and not dissapoint Jesus. :D
