Greatest Vol Player that didn't play in the NFL?

I would also like to throw in George Cafego who was the number 1 overall pick in 1940 of the Chicago Cardinals but only played sparingly in the NFL. I know a lot of you kids have know idea who that is but he is on the short list of people most responsible for making Tennessee football the great program that it has usually been until recently.

Someone else already alluded to this but he played for Barcelona in NFL Europe, the Los Angeles Xtreme in the XFL, then played 11 seasons in the CFL. I think early in his CFL career he was invited to the Cowboys training camp. He did very well up there, and will probably end up in the CFL Hall of Fame. He retired 2 years ago and I think he is now coaching in the CFL.

Brown was probably the real deal and deserving of his ranking. He backs up the best back in the league right now and there is little to no letdown when he gets the ball.

Martin actually got some PT with the Raiders. I remember the Mexico City game well. That was his rookie year. Tee made the 53 man roster a couple of times for the Steelers and the Raiders.

I didn't know Bryce Brown played for the Vikings. I thought he was an Eagle......

Well, if we're gonna include those 'who only played sparingly' in the NFL...

How about Dewey "The Swamp Rat" Warren from the mid-sixties who was the QB that led Tennessee out of the old Single Wing, '3 yards and a cloud of dust' days. He was our first passing QB. Our first QB to pass for 1000 yards. Drafted by the Bengals in 1968 and played 7 games that year and started 3, then went to coaching.

That alone would put him first on my list if he hadn't been the one to make me run around the house like an orangutan screeching, "We scored, We scored!" when he either threw or ran for 6.

I will never ever forget his 1965 season, beating UCLA going to the Bluebonnet Bowl and knowing that Coach Dickey had us back after Bowden Wyatt's decline from greatness.

^ the lack of success for Joey Kent and Marcus Nash was surprisingly ridiculous. They both barely played. I think Nash had under 10 receptions.

One of the things that makes college football so exciting is the unknown each season...a Chuck Webb,Jamal Lewis or even a Herchal Walker...I'm always ready to see what a new season brings...GO VOLS!
