Obviously it's highly debatable. Just wanted to hear people's opinions.

Im personally partial to the 1939(I think?) team that held every opponent scoreless.

You would be correct they went undefeated, unscored and untied on in the regular season. And some of those were some lopsided victories. Then they got shut out in the Rose Bowl to USC...

I liked the 2001 team - feel like we got outcoached in the last 1:00 in the UGA game and in the second half of the championship game. I thought we would have given UM a run for their money.

I will always feel it was an even match. Neither team was going to line up and run it. I think our passing game was better than theirs(EP, DS, KW, JW). I think our Qb was better. D-lines were equal. Their O-line was better. Slight edge to them at LB. I think their secondary was better than ours. Both teams have multiple players in the league 10 years later still starting!! Evenly matched teams, except for the hype machine of Miami. We most likely win it. JMHFO.

1998 was our greatest championship bar none. I'm not sure it was our greatest team ever.

The 1997 Vols might have been our best ever.

The late 90's teams would have beaten the '39 team just because of changes in the game. The '39 team was the best of the era and arguably the best ever.

My favorite is 2001 just because they beat Michigan in the only UT/UM game ever! My spousal unit is a UM type and I can still maintain my superiority.

I still go with 39. You can only compare teams to their competition in that era.

The 39 team lost their 2 best players before that Rose Bowl, I think : Suffridge and Cafego, who are 2 of the greatest College Football players of all time.

The 1939 Team by far was the greatest. To my knowledge the last major college team to go thru a regular season and be unscored on was UT 1939!

Agreed - I kinda always thought that 01 team had more talent than the 98 team.

I thought we would have given UM a run for their money.

I like to think so but that Miami team was one of the best ever, we certainly wouldve done better than Nebraska

Bottom line is we got out coached by saban and richt that year. We were the best team in college talent wise.

I don't think bowl games really meant anything back then. They were essentially like what preseason games are now. Or the NFL Pro Bowl.

Those Tommy Frazier Nebraska teams of the 1990s would have put the wood to the 2001 Hurricanes.

Just thought I would get that out there. It needs to be said with all the pimping of the 2001 'Canes on this board.

It is a different time and a different era.

Cafego didn't go to that game. Bowl games were looked upon differently.

Yet, it still feels like an asterisk on the season.

^^This. More specifically, 1995 Nebraska.

As far as talent goes, the 1990 and 1999 teams were the most talented teams by far including the 1997 team.

Ironic that most years the team with the most talent doesn't the NC. Bama's 2010 team was far more experienced and talented than the 2009 NC team and they lost three games.

Same with our 98 team. Not the most talented we've had, but there are other factors that go into winning. I was around the 90 team some on campus and alot of those guys didn't like each other. Saw intramural basketball games between them almost erupt into riots.

There's a reason Nebraska always had trouble with Miami, and it's the same reason the 1995 team would struggle with the 2001 Canes.

I'm not saying they would've won by half a century like they did every other game that year, but I'm confident Nebraska would win. Oh what a game that would be.
