Greatest UT Duo In History?

King was also unstoppable cutting to the basket. He had the range to hit 3s, but he would have benefited a lot had there been a 3PL because Grunfeld, Jackson, and Woods-Darden-Bertelkamp would have forced defenses to respect them taking 3-point shots.

Don’t forget that the college 3PL has always been shorter than the NBA 3. The rosters those 3 years would have thrived with the 3s being available.
I'm not sure Bernard had the range to make 3 pointers since he didn't shoot them in his HOF years. Yeah, when it was 19'9" he might have made a few. Bernard gave a detailed description in a forum a few years ago how he attacked from either side. He developed different types of shots from his complex grid attack

His best weapon was driving to the rim. Whether on a fast break or in the half court. He was unstoppable with his size and quickness.

He probably gets a few more offensive rebounds from missed 3 pointers. He already had a career average of 13RPGs and without a shot clock to increase the number of possessions on the defensive end. A shot clock wouldn’t have affected TN’s pace on offense much at all though.

Johnson won an NCAA tournament game with DeVoe in his first year.
Getting old, can’t remember if it was Haywood or King who was reported to have folks put 50 cent prices on the top of the backboard and he would go up and get them. Seems Spencer worked at Rice Olds his one summer here. I could walk to the Rice house from mine in safety and within 2 minutes in Deane Hill. It is amazing how cloudy a guys memory can get in 58 years.

Rice was prominent in the Orange Tie Section in the early Mears years. We were in the second wave of folks that filled it up. Some family friends were all in early and provided the hot tip. The vests were all orange, the ties had more blue than ORANGE stripes????

Yeah, I know Haywood was a super talented player. Would have been a treat had he been able to play at UT. Could have possibly been the second best player in team history
Greatest thing Spencer did was rep Tennessee a little when he went in the NBA Hall of Fame a few years ago. He didn’t have to do so; everyone had forgotten by then but him!

Although it has been a joy watching theses guys it's not even close to Ernie and Bernie.

Why? Theeir run of success, winning of many big/important games and overall the position of the program are all factors.

I'm not saying most talented but they are certainly the cornerstones of the most overall successful period in UT history at the peak of the program's success, status and relevance. Do they not pass an "eye test" criteria?

correct, he only played three years and shared the SEC POTY award with Ernie Grunfield in 77 I think, ( whatever his last year was) Can't even imagine his stats if the three point line was in play then.
I doubt king ever shot what would be a 3 pt shot during his career at Tennessee but there were 3 & 4 year players at every school. I’d hate to see what he’d done to these inside guys today. King played against a lot of future NBA players just in the SEC during his 3 years. Dominated practically all of them.

I never seen them play I'm not old enough. But I am smart enough to have actually done my research over the years
You can see the 1975 Ky-Tn game on YouTube. I’d suggest watching it. One on the great games in Stokely. Vols won 102-95. That was the last game Ky lost that year until the NCAA championship game vs UCLA.

Bernard King and Ernie Grunfield are by far the best duo. If I remember correctly, King I think had an injured finger during the NCAA tourney and probably hurt us.. I want to think that team had a couple other good players too. Ernie and Bernie though, man unstoppable.
Mike Jackson would have been a 20 log on any other team.

King took several from three point distance. IIRC, sometimes in the corners, but usually from the right wing. However since those were only worth 2 points it was a lot more efficient to instead blow by anybody guarding him out there and get looks from 10’ and closer. He averaged just under 26 PPG over his career. He could score from anywhere. But as you suggested, his outside shots were usually on the 3PL or a step inside. There was no reason to take them from the future 3PL distance. He couldn’t be guarded at 15’ or more - he’d blow right past defenders that challenged him that far from the basket.

Something I’ve always wondered was how they set those fields..I know they mostly kept you in your region which led to uneven brackets…but before they started seeding late 70’s and early 80’s, how were the games set? They weren’t blind drawing teams, were they? Or maybe they were.. I’ve tried to find this answer forever, never seen it referenced
I'm not sure how they decided it. But it definitely cost us. We were ranked 15th in the final AP poll in 1977, we drew #6 ranked Syracuse in the first round in Baton Rouge.

Detroit and MTSU played each other in the first round there as well. Detroit was ranked #12 and MTSU unranked.

We split the SEC Championship with Kentucky that season and swept them head to head but they got to play Princeton in the first round.

Arkansas was ranked in the top 20 and 26-2, and drew a top 10 Wake Forest team in the first round in Norman. Unranked Kansas State played unranked Providence in Norman as well.

UCLA was ranked #2 and had to open with a top 20 Louisville team in Pocatello, also in Pocatello unranked Long Beach State got to play unranked Idaho in the first round.

Honestly, it mostly looks like they tried to have more evenly matched first round games, which screwed a lot of good teams back then.

1st or 2nd. Shaq and Chris Jackson were potent but for a shorter time together.
SGA and Anthony Davis won the national championship for Kentucky. Christian Laatner and Bobby Hurley played together at least 3 years. Stacey Augmon and Larry Johnson. Those last two weren't SEC, but about 3 Florida players were together for their back to back national championships. Robey and Givens at UK.
