Greatest Rivalry in College Football

Between big time college football fans, I'm sure the UM-OSU game would draw more viewers. I'm sure veterans that aren't even football fans or fans of either team that watch the Army navy game.

So to be a fan what do they have to do? Ride a goat and paint themselves blue and gold while throwing tritons?

Also, do you believe that everyone watching the OSU/Mich game is a fan of either team?....... or cares

I know this isn't about "The Game" or whatever, but where does the Florida vs Florida State game rank in the greatest CFB rivalries?

We'll know in about ten years. It was quickly turning into a great rivalry back when both were perennially top 10 teams, but since that quit being true you barely hear about the game anymore -- even from UF and FSU fans. If the fans stop talking about the game when championships aren't on the line, then it's not that much of a rivalry.

Basically, what I'm arguing is that a rivalry game by definition has to be important apart from what's going on in the standings. Otherwise it's just an important game. Would the players and fans care just as passionately about it if both teams were 3-8?

Tennessee and Alabama have had both been up and down over the last few decades, but that game always has a little extra sheen of hatred smeared over it apart from anything else that's going on in the conference. Army and Navy haven't played for championships in years, yet that game still means everything to the two schools. Georgia-Georgia Tech never has anything to do with championships, yet it's a great rivalry. Fans in this area spend the entire year trash-talking, and then once a year the whole state holds its breath to see what's going to happen. That's a rivalry. Nothing is ever on the line, yet everything is.

Nobody has argued that OSU-Michigan isn't a great rivalry, because plainly, it is. But just because ESPN talks it up the most doesn't make it automatically the best rivalry; the only reason why so much always seems on the line in that game is because the rest of the conference is so bad that 9 wins is a down year for either team.

This is the very definition of a rivalry game. And yes, I watched it on TV last year.

I've watched almost every Army Navy game that has come on during my 28 years. I am not a vet. My dad was in the Army, and his dad was in the Navy.

I have watched only one OSU/UM game, and it was last year, and only to see which of those two teams were about to be dis-embowled by the SEC Champion.

I hate Michgan. I really hate OSU. I hate these two teams because I am forced-fed crap about how they are the greatest teams/greated rivalry ever. I always watch AU-UA on that date because i care about that game.

Army Navy is the only game that has comercials showing alumn/fans (soldiers/sailors) rooting thier teams on. You see the crowd of mid-shipmen or cadets dressed in their finest, you see canons and livestock on the field. The only thing I see from the OSU.UM game is the college gameday crew and possibly some OSU fans rioting in the streets on CNN.

OSU/UM has great ratings because it has more of an impact on the college season. Army/Navy is ALWAYS ON NATIONAL TV and it really don't mean crap to the college season. It is on TV because people all around the world will tune in, some tune in to it as the only game they watch all season.

Army Navy has presidents and MOH winners in its history.

But to 16 year olds, this doesn't matter. I just hope one day in thier lives, it will.

tvvolsfan, I admire your resilience, and I think you truly do believe that OSU-Michigan is the best rivalry. I can understand why you're not too interested in Army-Navy right now - I probably wasn't when I was 16. It's not flashy, it's not glitzy, you don't know the names of the players. And I think when you're a bit older you'll look back and realize why all that stuff makes it unique and truly great.

If you ever have the chance to go to an Army-Navy game, please do. You'll have a great experience. It's the only game where every single US citizen could have an interest in the game. It's the only one that will be broadcast every year on national television (no regional broadcast) regardless of records. It's the only one that will be watched by service members across the world. It's the only one where hatred of the opponent is nearly matched by respect for the opponent. And contrary to some claims on here, sometimes it is great football. Maybe not the fastest or strongest or quickest players, but it's true football at its heart, played with honor.

Very well put. The traditions surrounding Academy games are amazing to watch.

There are a few rivalries that I am interested in enough to watch (in no particular order):
1) The Third Saturday in October
2) The Iron Bowl
3) UK-UofL
4) Red River Shootout
5) The Apple Cup
6) The Cocktail Party
7) GT-UGA

Never argue with a fool. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

It's time to stop the pissing match and move on.

Uk-OofL is a very intriguing game in recent years...always enjoy it

I'll say one more thing on the subject now that it got bumped. I respect the tradition in Army-Navy, and I'm sure I will appreciate it more when I get older, but it probably isn't something I will change my mind on. I want to watch good football, not tradition. I've sat through Army-Navy before, and for me it just wasn't nearly as exciting as other games I have watched.

I will say I'm surprised at how little respect OSU-Michigan has gotten. At the very least, that rivalry is huge. I'm not sure how it wouldn't go in the top 10 on any college football rivalry list.

I would put it in the top 10 but it wouldn't be in the top 3. Just my opinion.

I'm not going to call you an idiot or anything like that, you've always come across as an intelligent poster.

You're just wrong on this one:p

Just curious to what your top 3 is...

There are a few rivalries I can understand putting over the game I have defended for pages...

This list includes Alabama-Auburn, Texas-Oklahoma, and if tradition is really in your opinion the sole factor in determining a great rivalry, Army- Navy.

I can't see a whole lot more.

1. Army - Navy
2. Harvard - Yale (The Game)
3. Alabama - Auburn
4. Texas - Oklahoma
5. Tennessee - Alabama
6. Michigan - Ohio State

Tradition plays a huge role in my list. But this is just my opinion, blast away if you wish.

Tweren't that long ago that, for several years runining, FSU-Miami was the college football event of the year.

Doesn't have the history of course, but it was the most anticipated game nationally, the one with the greatest ramifications, the one with the most talent on the field, and the one with the most bitterness between rival players. For about a decade.

It was the one every one made sure they watched. Ah, the good old days.

I'm not saying that OSU-Michigan is for sure the greatest rivalry based on a poll, but there are certainly a lot of other people who feel that way.

You've been in Buckeye country too long to be objective, as I have been in UT country to be objective.

I disagree with 2.

I'd love to say Tennessee-Alabama is up in front of OSU-Michigan, but I just can't put it there because there are just too many UT fans that consider Florida their biggest rival, and I think a small majority of Alabama fans consider Auburn their biggest rival.

And I don't expect my opinion to ever change on Harvard-Yale. You can say it is The Game, but it will never peak my interest to watch them play.

I can certainly understand the rest.
