I am admittedly not steeped in the details of the history of Tennessee football like many of you. I know that there have been many great players and teams over the years. One thing I have wondered about is who are some of the great assistant coaches who have coached at Tennessee over the years? Their greatness may have come here, at another school, or even in the NFL. I expect that there have to be some, does anyone have thoughts?

There are a SHAT-TON of coaches you've heard of that have come through UT. Here are some off the top of my head:

Kippy Brown
Lovie Smith
Joe Avezzano (ST coach for Dallas during their '90's run)
Ed Orgeron
Monte Kiffin
Tommy West
Ron Zook
Doug Marronne
Ken Donahue
Jon Gruden

Shane Beamer
Al Saunders
Dave Clawson
Frank Wilson

There’s just so many that went on to be head coaches at some level in college.

He wasn’t good here. Wasn’t a fit.
Clawson was the square peg in the round hole. He is an excellent coach, but the personnel on the team when Fulmer brought him in were not good fits for his offensive schemes. Also, it was said it takes one year to learn his system, but it really shows up in the second year. He has done a great job at Wake Forest.

Wasn’t Dave clawson awful here? I may have him confused with someone else. I was fairly young when the person I’m thinking of was our offensive coordinator
I am not sure that Clawson's offense was ever installed here. I do know that Wake scored a lot of points the last couple of years and that they were ranked the highest they had been ranked since the 1940s.

If he could have stayed away from 3rd and longs he would have been thought of higher. He had a lot of NFL talent in the 90's which makes you wonder how good was he really? He didn't last at LSU. In the USFL now.
Didn’t last at LSU? He turned down an extension to go to Texas AM. He was the highest paid DC in the country for a few years.

The quirk with the OL where they lined up regardless of position spooked a lot of the peanut gallery, but the failure ultimately stemmed from Fulmer micromanaging and second guessing and by the middle of the season taking over OC duties. Buoyed by his Mike Ditka level outsized self-confidence. He had a good run as OL coach and OC as an assistant and he was always going to have more faith in that recollection than any hire with no personal history.

he didn't have success but he told a roomful of us in July 2008, it would take two years for his offense to really produce the results required to be successful. Based on how he has done elsewhere, I think he was being truthful. Rest of coaching staff was sitting in that room with about 70 of us, fans. Was a special invite two day session.

I found Clawson easy to talk to but somewhat too technical in his speaking. Very smart man.

Not sure of your sources or if you're just carrying on an internet rumor but Fulmer did not do that. QBs all went to Fulmer in September and asked he take over the offense and he refused. That came right from a quarterback's mouth.

K. By the middle of the season, per anyone watching one of our game’s MOUTH? There was nobody else other than himself that he would’ve trusted with the task. Clawson wasn’t running the offense, titularly or otherwise! I’m furthest from crapping on your boy’s legacy and defend it frequently, but he drank all the water you’re attempting to carry for him.

did the offense change during the season? Fulmer didn't even know Clawson's offense well enough to call plays.

Every game is on my YouTube channel if you can pinpoint the game where the offense changed and Fulmer began running it.. I will sure go back and review it to pick up the differences.
