Great read on our BasketVols

Awesome read!!!! It's a rare thing on VN ( at least the football side of things) to see something enjoyable to read. It seems the basketball forums have more common sense.

Awesome read. If you don't like Admiral, Grant, and CRB, then you don't have a pulse. It's easy to do when you roll 7 or 8 5* out there every year like a Kansas, Duke, or Kentucky, but it means a lot more when the 2 and 3* work there arse off to get to the point where Grant and Admiral are and see that pay off with success. It also doesn't hurt that both are well-spoken and extremely likeable guys. This is exactly what Volnation needs with the disaster that is the current football program.

Having watched the venerable E & B show as an undergrad at UT(the full time they were Vols), I'll agree to the similarities about height and superior athleticism, but IMHO it stops there. Aside from Mike Jackson at PG, the complimentary talent wasn't there, like CRB's squad. Also, Both prior to and afterward, Ray Mears' style was to hold the ball and not to run the floor. E & B morphed his team, but they did it on their own as superstars...minus the phenomenal chemistry, teamwork and excellent X's & Os CRB's blended into these Vols. Since closely following our guys since the 1950s, I can confidently declare this UT Vols BB team is the best ever.
Was in my teens during the E&B era. Bernard was and probably always will be the best player ever to wear the Orange. I think Jackson was the 3 guard and Rodney Woods and Johnny Darden were the pg's. They also had Reggie Johnson at center for 1 year so their talent level was probably better than this years squad. As you said, the phenomenal chemistry this team has, not only among the players but also with Coach Barnes surpasses any I have ever seen in my 50+ years. It's hard for anybody not to love this team.

Barnes is a 5* coach. I have never seen anyone teach and motivate like he can. His knowledge of the game is really impressive.
Just our luck, we find the best coach in the country and he is nearing retirement.
Start the search now. It will take a long time to find a replacement for this coach.

One of the BEST things about having a great basketball (and sometimes football) team, are the articles that make your chest swell with pride.

He still has at least a decade left in him imo. Coach K and Boeheim are both in their 70’s and are still coaching. CRB looks rejuvenated and ready to coach, I don’t think he’s going to retire any time soon.

If he stays 10 more years, we definitely get atleast one NC. i'd bet the farm.

Your information on Jackson, the 2 point guards, and Reggie Johnson is correct. No doubt, talent-wise, these teams will never be surpassed. However, the team chemistry and quality kids and selfless play make this a better TEAM.

Mike Jackson was actually the shooting guard rather than the point guard. Rodney Woods was the PG Ernie's freshman and sophomore years. Johnny Darden was the PG Ernie's junior and senior year (Bernard's sophomore and junior years). E&G never played with a big center. Doug Ashworth was really an undersized power forward (about 6'6") and Reggie Johnson's one year with E&G (his freshman year), he was very thin... but he was tall (about 6'9"). All of the best teams in that era had 6'10-7', 260+ pound low posts (I think that KY had 2... Mike Phillips and Rick Robey) and the prevailing strategy was to pound the ball inside. Ernie did play one year with Len Kosmalski, but he was gone King's freshman season a year later.

Darden nearly died one year. He hit his head while swimming during a trip to an away game and was pulled unconscious from the hotel pool. Could have happened in one of the post E&G seasons.

Since the football team gives us nothing to be excited about anymore it is so nice to see success in basketball. I can't wait to see what happens with these guys the rest of the year.

Mears would run and shoot as well as anyone one. Jackson was a three and Woods was the point. Woods was a great point and an outstanding shooter as was Jackson. Mears didn't have a lot of Bigs and relied an pure athletic ability. I saw the game which was played in Atlanta against UCLA. dur9ng the E&B years. This game was put together just to make sure these two teams could play each other. It was a fast-paced game which UCLA eke out a win, but it was a Nationally watched game.
