i haven't read too much of the fallout of the game Saturday, i can imagine it's one of two things..."great road win" or "awful offensive game we're lucky to win".

here's what i'll tell you.......

as the game was going on, live, i was increasingly frustrated with the fact we couldn't come up with a way to score a TD in the red zone. that's a problem. it was very aware to me that up 9-0 and watching Mizzou drive (prior to the fumble) that if they scored a TD, that 3 fg's wouldn't have meant much.

then the fumble. and 3 and out after 3 and out....as the game went along, it also became increasingly aware that we didn't have to do too much, as long as we didn't make any big mistakes. our defense did a great job of making sure their offense didn't get in a rhythm, and forcing opportune turnovers.

now, for the ultra positive, here's what i really liked about this game:
looking back...we did actually dictate what we wanted to do offensively. we ran it down their throats time and time again....against a really good defensive front mind you.

Medley. 80% on Saturday. granted, i was pissed basically every time he had to trot out there, but give him credit, this is the game we needed him, and he came thru....in this game, FG's were enough.

special teams...another big win here. we DOMINATED the field position game. there's no other way to state it. we owned 'em.

Jalen. Hurd. great game. Kamara also, while not utilized as much, made 2 or 3 really big plays.

the defense didn't allow Mizzou any opportunity to "get right" against us. our defense played as well, if not better, than we expected them to against that offense.

there's nothing fancy here, and no highlight plays offensively. but i liked the game plan, and while i wouldn't say we should/could do the same thing against some other teams (settle for FG's), i'll give everyone on the sideline credit for not panicking b/c we couldn't punch it in. this game, against that offense, and against their defense, we did exactly what we set out to do, and that's really all you can ask.

ended a 3 game losing streak to the Tigers, and guaranteed a winning regular season, and a chance to finish 2nd in the SEC E with a 5-3 SEC record.

i say "good win" all in all, with all the emotional stuff surrounding this game, i was glad to see our team come out and dictate to their opponent. 19-8 is hardly a blow out, but it's also the closest an 11 pt win could feel like a blow out.

GBO, BEAT VANDY.

It was a game where UT didn't play particularly well on O but the game was never in doubt. That's a nice feeling. We're turning the corner when you can win conference games on the road in this manner.

You're right about special teams, OP. I think an argument could be made that Trevor Daniel could be the MVP this season. How many times has he flipped the field? I know the defense played stout, and Hurd had a great game. But Mizzou played in the shadow of their own goal post all night. That really hurts an offense.

A Win is a Win, there are "better" teams with uglier wins this past Saturday. My advice is not to over analysis the end result, you wouldn't do it to your children so don't do it to a College Football team. CBJ plays what he feels his team can execute the best, with Dobbs passing issues, he did not want to take a chance, on what most people thought, would be a defensive game........it was. So, actually this was a great win....AWAY, against the 8th ranked defense that has played better running teams than UT. So, there was not reason for the Coaches to change the game plan, the OVERALL OBJECTIVE is to win. I've seen UT lose games and on paper we kicked their @$$, but TOs and penalties killed us and we end up losing by 7 or less. I think as a whole UT fans want it NOW! we want to win by 3 TDs every game and have the NC Trophy every year........trust me, CBJ wants that too, but the reality is, we don't have all the horses in the stable............BUT IT IS COMING!

GBO!!

On another note, I absolutely LOVED the Ohio State loss and the subsequent locker room implosion that followed. I hope they get rolled again this week by khaki pants

I know we sometimes all question the play calling and game plan, but honestly, they stuck with what was working and kept feeding Hurd, who was unstoppable. We were able to control time of possession and Dobbs did just enough with his legs and arm to keep them honest. No other way to say it OP than we just dominated the game plan, without needing a sexy box score.

A good, old-fashioned, slobber-knockin', scratch-and-claw, bare-armed, beat 'em down, pound-the-rock kind of win.

Anybody have a problem with that?

A win is a win. I was frustrated with some of the play calling for sure, but certainly please we got the win. I am not convinced we have the right Offensive Coordinator for the type of offense we play, however, I don't see that changing unless DeBord has had enough at end of year. To be a great team, we are going to have to throw the ball down field a few times.

Mizzou is awful. With even a marginal threat from out passing game it could have been 40-9

Correct. If Butch never tones the conservatism down ( he is a 9 or 10 out of 10 on the conservatism scale ) and gets the passing game going you can expect UT to play the decent teams ( miz )closer than they should, but, by playing it safe and conservative we will also play the good teams ( OU and Bama ) close. We play so conservative and safe that teams hardly ever get a turnover on our side of the field. We rarely give them the game by turning it over in the passing game. I'm fine with this approach, except in one area. When it is third down, late in the game and we have the lead, the defense is selling out to stop the run up the middle and you see them blow the play up in the back field. For heaven's sakes, please, figure out how to complete a slant or some type of quick man beater route!!!!

I really loved the adjustment Butch Jones made for Missouri when they showed overload pressure up the middle. Notice, we ran the option and torched Missouri when they gave us this look. Excellent adjustment by CBJ to take advantage of one of Missouri's better blitz packages.

It didn't matter in this game. 9 points was enough to win.

We have one game left. It's time to come to terms with the fact that our passing game is what it is and our running game is our strength.

I know there are a lot of people saying we should have thrown the ball more and I completely understand. IMO we never really had to throw because this game was never really in question after the 1st half and the coaches knew it. When you rush for nearly 250 yrds against a D like Mizzou, by all means pound the rock. Now with that being said, Dobbs has his limitations as a passer and needs to improve if our offense wants to take that next step. GBO!

Agreed, we should have scored more points but if could not put up more than thirty on SC's defense, why do think we could have scored 40 on the tigers defense?

Our Oline is C-. Every other play DT's are walking in our backfield. When we get better there we will win games by larger margins and avoid 4th quarter collapses.
The rest of the pieces are there to win the east next year. Our running game stats are shockingly good. I think Hurd,Kamara, and Dobbs deserve most of the credit for that success. Alabama opens holes for Henry to run for ten untouched. Hurd has to claw his way for three between tackles.

it really should have been if we could have gotten TD's instead of FG's that's my biggest criticism is the red zone inefficiency. other than that, i don't have any issues.

and again, not advocating it...but if there was a game you could get away with that, it was this one.

Mizzou has given up more than 21 points ONCE this season and people EXPECT us to hang 40+ on them. SMH

well, it was there for us...that much is certain.

i was pleased to see our offense get the ball back with 5-6 minutes left and basically end the game.

that made me feel good. not overly concerned about the passing. we made 2-3 really good throws to Josh malone that kept drives going, but the reality was we didn't need to throw.

they couldn't stop the running game, and they were getting their butts kicked on field position.

it played right in to our hands.

just gotta find a way to get better in the red zone.

We really just pounded Mizzou into the ground the entire night. Even their lone touchdown was very hard to come by. We very nearly had a goal line stand from the half yard line.

i told my brother as they were making that drive...."well, it took more than 3 quarters to get here, now just make it take a while"

and when we stopped them on the line, and they had to keep running plays, i just looked at him and said "there's another 2 minutes gone".

even with the TD unless we did something stupid, i figured it was pretty much over. those 4 plays to get the TD took nearly another 2 min off the clock.

good stuff. even when they won, they lost.
