Along with the ones previously mentioned, here's a few more to consider:
*Brian Downey of Thin Lizzy
*Scott Travis of Racer X and Judas Priest
*Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, The Winery Dogs, and many other collaborations
*Jason Rullo of Symphony X
*James "The Rev" Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold
*The Appice brothers, Carmine and Vinnie

Peart is at the top of the list. He made an instrument designed to maintain tempo sing a harmony just like Lifeson's guitar and Lee's bass. Nothing was repeated, no 8 beat segment was ever the same. A student of the instrument till the end.

Keith Moon. Very underrated. His fills and riffs arent for the faint of heart trying to recreate them.

The greatest have already been named. I'd include Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. What a fantastic idea to have two drummers/percussionists in one band.

I know it's a drummers thread. But I have to mention the two lead guitarists, too. Duane and Dickie Betts. Gregg did everything to keep the dream going. Greatest jam band EVER.

Pour Some Sugar on Me: speaks for itself. Personally, I admire anyone that comes back from a traumatic arm amputation and continues to play percussion.

You should be dead. And so should Rick Allen. At least he continued to play the drums. Whether you like Def Leppard or not. Have to admire the man for having the guts to come back to his passion.
