Great article by Andy Staples

So forget the fact that Dooley went 17-20 at Louisiana Tech. The degree of difficulty there is much higher than at Tennessee; Dooley's 8-5 season with an Independence Bowl win in 2008 is the equivalent of Tennessee winning an SEC title.

This is where I stopped reading.

Upgrade....possibly! However, do I see us being equal to the Florida, Bama, and Texas programs of the world in 5 - 10 years....NO. I just am not seeing how we get there from here with this hire.....thoughts???

It is a good article. Tries to put things into perspective. I have to agree it would be tough to do much at La Tech. I imagine a good recruit for him would be a 2 star, with a 3 star being a "big fish." If you go and look at who he actually lost to there, his record doesn't seem near as bad. There were a few SEC teams he got beat down by, plus Boise State every year. He did beat Miss. State a couple years ago. His team played LSU tough this year (8 point loss I think). Regardless, he is here now. Give him a year or two and then make your judgements.

I'm not trying to down Dooley, but La Tech is in the same conference as Boise St and they have manage to go undefeated several times and play BCS bowls. I want Dooley to be successful and I support him, but I don't like exaggerating what he did at Tech.

That is 100% complete and total opinion based totally off of conjecture and your perspective. You may end up right but just because you can't "see" it happening doesn't really mean anything at all. Alot of LSU fans didn't "see" Saban dominating the SEC within 3 yrs of his arrival, but a whole lot of UT fans did "see" NAME REDACTED doing that for UT.

How long did it take the coach at Boise to build that thing?

I don't know but he's at Colorado now on the verge of being replaced. Previous coaching record is important but its not everything.

Ya I really don't think it's possible to accurately weigh and measure every single possible variable and come out with an accurate prediction of how a coach will do at a new place. But that doesn't mean we can't keep right on trying.

Boise St has been being built up for years by a series of good coaches starting with Houston Nutt yes that Houston Nutt in 1997 then Dirk Koetter who went on to coach Arizona St followed by Dan Hawkins who took over in 2000 and now there current coach it took them a decade to get to the pinnacle they reached by beating Oklahoma in the fiesta bowl a lot less time than Dooley had at La Tech

Yah, it's more than Xs, Os and recruits... You have to weigh location, facilties, finances... DD was not just recruiting and coaching, but was rewriting athletics in total at LATech.

They are a better athletics program as a whole b/c he showed up. The more I learn, the luckier I feel to have our new coach.

The guy has a point. Who wants to play for LA Tech? Who wants to play for anyone in their conference? You get my point. At LA Tech he didn't have the talent to develop and if you don't have the talent you can call the perfect call every down, but your players won't execute as well as those in the SEC

Boise ST is in Idaho, La Tech is in Louisiana.
La Tech has to compete for every good player with LSU, TX, AL, the MS's, OK and TN plus a few others. La Tech has more schools competing for players within a couple hundred miles than Idaho does within a thousand miles.
I think Dooley has done well with the resources he had, now that he has virtually limitless resources look out, he's going to make that scuzz ball we used to have look like an amature.

I agree it tends to be overemphasized.

Obviously Tech is not going to get many top players from LA with LSU in their backyard. I think that's a given.

Yup. I agree. I just kept getting this uneasy feeling with Kiffin that any day, the whole thing was going to crash in some type of crazy scandal ot probation. Don't get me wrong, I thought he had a good chance of success too but I always came back to a dark dread that doom was just around the corner. Personally I feel much better now. I think Dooley has the same coaching potential or more. As far as recruiting, his style will be different but the results will be similar rating wise. Hopefully much better character wise.
