Forget about the source, here is the link to the ultimate, orange-blooded, feel-good story about Jacob Gilliam: Tennessee Football: OL Jacob Gilliam Is College Football's Ultimate Warrior | Bleacher Report.

Incidentally, for those of us who have never experienced an ACL injury, perhaps those of you who have done so can explain how common (or exceedingly rare) this aspect of Jacob's experience is:

"That's one of the things that's really been a blessing to me, I haven't felt any pain," Gilliam said. "Obviously, I got to play the whole game against Alabama, and the only thing I kind of felt was a little weakness here and there, but that went away really quick, and it really didn't last more than a play or two."

I tore my acl senior year of high school. After a month of rehab I came back with a brace and had no issues besides the brace was uncomfortable. Doctor said I couldn't mess it up anymore so my mother let me play. Two games later I tore my other acl.

I tore an ACL playing basketball in 2004. The injury was not fun when it happened, but it did not hurt afterwards and barely swelled up. I was walking around comfortably until the surgery. It really swelled up when it was fixed. Meanwhile, my other ACL had already failed at the time, and I didn't find out until this year.

All that said, I have been told by many others about how much pain they were in after the tear and how swollen their knee became. My cousin said he needed his knee drained with a needle to have an MRI (swelling fluids block the picture). Me - I just walked in and lied down on the table.

I partially tore my ACL in high school and I had to sit out for like 2 or 3 months. The only bad thing I noticed during this period was extra "movement" in my knee while I was on crutches and not much pain outside of rehab. The biggest difference from coming back after all that time off was my left leg being so much weaker than my right. My calf muscle was definitely 10%+ smaller than it was.

I've had 3 replaced and if it's just an acl with no other damage then the pain went away pretty quickly. The real issue was it never really felt stable and could slip which really hurt. I'm sure the brace helps with stability but it's a pretty cool move by Gilliam. Wish him the best of luck

I had the same experience, crazy intense pain when it happened followed by severe swelling, but once the swelling sudsided, there was not any pain. Tearing MCL was a different story, not as painful when it was torn, but more lingering pain.

Great article and kudos to Gilliam for his hard work. Downs is also a VFL for playing in pain for two seasons until having surgery in December. He is a man for accepting his backup role as a senior with humility and for helping the younger tight end learn the position.
