*****Grant Williams named SEC Player of the Year

Guess Woodson deserved the Heisman, because he was the best player on the best team, despite Manning having better stats than any other QB winner prior, right?

Apples to oranges. Tenn was an elite team that year. Georgia isn't even a good team this year

I don’t know and I don’t really care.

We are talking about basketball and a guy on a team that finished 1st in the SEC with the a 10 SOS, and a guy that played on a team that finished 10th, was 2 games over .500, and with a far inferior schedule.

So by your logic, awards should always be given to whichever player has the best stats, regardless of who they play, and how they finish? Solid.

Maten: PPG 1st, FG% 7th, FGM 2nd, RPG 2nd, rebounds 2nd, total OR 107, total DR 158, blocks 8th

Williams: PPG 11th, FG% 5th, FGM 5th, RPG 17th, rebounds 18th, total OR 59, total DR 115, blocks 9th

As I said, these are individual awards. It's not Most Valuable, it's the best player individually. That's Maten.

Point is it's individual. This fanbase thinks it was horrible for the voters to hold losing to Florida against him, and that's exactly what we're doing against Maten. Maten is top 10 of almost all stats.

On UT’s Grant Williams being named SEC player of the year, Barnes said: ``He’d tell you the last 5 games Admmiral Schofield has played like the player of the year. Fact is, Grant has worked hard but he’s had great support. He’s done his part but he had a lot of help around him.’

Good stuff chris, thanks. I couldn't remember off the top of my head.

And in case you cared...
R. Widby won it as a SR
R. Slay won it as a SR
C. Lofton won it as a JR.

In addition to B. King, E. Grunfeld, and now G. Williams.

A part of me agrees with you, but just to satisfy my curiosity, are you okay with Schofield being 2nd team All-SEC?

Again manning lost to florida.
Maten lost to damn near everyone.
Imo when a team isn't good their best player gets knocked down a notch

I do see value in your thoughts though

Did win 16 games, how many would they have won without him? 8? Maybe 10? I think Tennessee still wins 17 without Williams.

Maybe Maten being penalized for being a ball hog. Just kidding.. I think.

Edit: Our team is actually a "team" in every sense of the word. If Grant goes out, then we still have others who will step up.

That's why this is a surprise, but he is a great player and well deserved on a good team with many well coached players.

With 8 players on the two teams, yes. I think the AP results is a more accurate result.

Okay, then this is tough to reconcile if we are just going to go by the statistical numbers...

Admiral Schofield - 2nd team All-SEC
13.5 ppg
5.8 rpg (lead the team)
1.8 apg
1.0 spg
45% FG%
38.5% 3-pt%
74% FT%

Mustapha Heron - nothing
16.6 ppg (lead the team)
5.5 rpg
0.9 apg
1.2 spg (lead the team)
45% FG%
34% 3-pt%
82% FT%

*Coaches vote

He got shafted on the coaches as well. But he did make 2nd team in the AP, while Schofield didn't. Another reason why the AP had it more accurate.

It's not MVP, it's Player of the Year. If it was most valuable, they'd call it that.

However, it's very similar to the Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four. That award has gone to the best player on the championship team for years.

I get it. Maten was outstanding on a bad team. I wouldn't have argued if he won it. But there is more to it than just numbers. I think there is a balance to the winning team v. best player argument.

The question is this:

Does being good on a bad team mean much?

I would invite you to look at Daniel stats at Howard for the answer to this

The fact that we were picked to be 13th and Grant was the team leader, while Barnes was the coach also would have something to do with these awards.

Shouldn't penalize a guy who brought it more consistently because his teammates were horrible. As I've said, the AP is much more accurate up and down the list.

You can say it’s an “individual” award but that doesn’t make it so.

Basketball is the quintessential team sport. Look at every crap team in the NCAA and there will be one guy putting up great numbers, but it means nothing if your team isn’t winning.

The coaches know. They voted GW. BTW, for those that say it's an individual award not a team award always claim Brady is the best. Nope. Not close. He is clearly on the best team most years but there have been many better individual QB's.

Grant is the POY. Enjoy!

Some truth to that but also some truth to the fact he choked when games were on the line. His team couldn't buy a close win and the SEC POTY has to take over when games are on the line. What did he do Saturday when the game was on the line? Wasn't it 0/9 the second half?
