Didn't know if this was already reported, but he did interview on Monday according to the Maryville Daily Times. Personally, I hope he gets a shot!

"It is also believed that former Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo is a candidate for the post."

First time I've seen Scelfo named publicly as well. Though that's hardly official word..

Wow, I haven't lived in Knoxville since 1997... but this cat has a pretty impressive resume. His success at Maryville speaks for itself. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a chance... even if we have a realistic shot at Scelfo.

I think he'd be a great addition, but surely there are candidates with much better resumes.

I think that you could be right, but I like the move...Your point is valid, you have to weigh him against the other possibilities...but I still think that he would be a good addition.

If there was another candidate that was obviously head and shoulders above the rest, it would make for an easy decision but this seems like the perfect opportunity to take a shot on someone. Its for TE coach, not OC.

In all of these new coaches, has anything been mentioned about someone stepping up as the Special Teams Coach? Did I miss that already being taken care of somehow?

Who coached special teams this year? I ask because, after coming out of the box very poorly, they made some changes and our special teams were pretty respectable for the remainder of the season. I hope we still have whoever that was, but I'm guessing we don't based on your comment.

Drayton will probably be coaching the special teams. He was the special team coach for Green Bay from 2001 - 2003

I never heard who was actually coaching special teams last year. All I heard CPF say was that they put in some kind of "spread" kickoff coverage for the Georgia game that worked well. It would just be nice to have someone on the staff take ownership and put Special Teams as a confident posititve part of the team instead of the pins and needles feeling that it has become.

Special Teams have no specific coach. It is a coaching by committee thing.

Quarles would be a good story and all but there is no way he should get the job over Scelfo. This last coaching hire needs to be a very good recruiter. Quarles has never recruited (although some might argue that point) at any level, much less the SEC. If we add him then we are adding two coaches who have never recruited D1 and one that has never recruited at any level.

While I would agree with you in years past, I actually thought ST play was much improved overall in 07.

Actually, I believe Quarles was a graduate assistant at the DII level. Does anybody know the specifics of whether that is true? Just making sure I am being accurate.

He was a Grad Assist. at Furman (D1-AA), where he went to school.

Exactly. Over the past couple of seasons, I've become used to complaining about ST play, and I had taken to calling them the "very special teams". During the second half of 07, I started to feel really silly about this. Every time I would gripe about the impending disaster we were about to witness, the ST did their job and I had to sit quietly for a while hoping nobody noticed what an idiot I appeared to be. If they can keep this up, I'll certainly be happy.

I know the feeling. For a long time I just wanted them to punt the ball through the endzone every time, as my fear of seeing a huge return outweighed the prospects of downing one inside the 5.
