GoVols247: Butch Jones "Comical to call this the biggest game"

Wait.. I'm so confused. Didn't CBJ specifically hire Stoops "to beat Florida"? So it's not a big game for CBJ.. but ask Stoops, and he'll admit it's not comical at all.

Looks like CBJ is trying to downplay the game so he doesn't get game anxiety.

CBJ is correct. Loosing this game would not help promote this program but it also would not stop the momentum unless we loose more than two of the 4. Say we loose this one and win the next three. Our Stock still goes way up, recruiting improves etc. We just need to be the best show on the road when Nick retires. The gators and dogs also have a long season ahead, so there is more than one path to ATL. But we would suffer another year under this cloud.

What if Florida doesn't lose any games in the SEC? Where's our path to ATL then?

I do agree with this. The double talk doesn't add up.

It is a big game.

"I would lick Butch's boots if he asked me"

Fulmer knew how important the Alabama game was to the fans and he made no bones about how he felt about them.

Well, Florida is that damn important this year

Butchfreakjosh has to be butchies son or best friend. Takes.up for him in everything. Could be his wife :/

Jones: 'Comical' to call this biggest game

“That’s absolutely ridiculous,” Jones told the hosts. “It’s comical. …

“I understand what’s at stake. I understand the rivalry and all that. [But if you] put so much emphasis on one game, there’s a long season to be played. Not one game is going to make or break Butch Jones and Tennessee football. I’d kind of chuckle if I hear that, but that’s not the case.”

I get what he is saying and all, every week is a big week, gotta win them all, yadda, yadda, yadda.....but man coachspeak probably would have actually been preferred here haha. Surely in his head, he realizes to the fans this is a make or break it game for a lot of Vol Nation.

Also, lol but did he just speak in 3rd Person?

Ya its dumb to speak in the 3rd person, but I agree in the sense that this game shouldn't be the biggest game of the season. It should be looked at as another winnable game on our schedule and nothing more. Not the most important of his career but a game to win. That is all. Just like next week will be a game to win. Stop trying to coach from the couch and support our team!

Nope, not at all. I don't whine everytime Butch says something that you don't agree with. If Gruden was the coach and we was in the exact same situation right now, ya'll would be trying to find something negative about him too. Wait till the game is actually played instead of worrying about what Butch says beforehand. Otherwise, keep your lame jokes to yourself.

He is the most tone deaf coach in America.

Most underrated statement ever. He tells the players to "own it" it's about time he takes responsibility for the team and "own it"! No more coach-speak; win the game with YOUR players or suffer the consequences. Butch, it's your reputation on the line as well as the players.

What a fan base. This program is finally a top 25 team, and all we do is bit@h about butch. I for one am thankful for all he's done. Other than a few missteps, he has done everything we've asked of him. This is his first big time gig. He is learning to be a big time coach as much as our current players are learning to play at a big time program. Why not support him as our head coach?

If he wins tomorrow a lot will change.

It's been over a decade since we've beaten Florida. And we're a school that has one a National Championship. That's unreal...

He's lost the mentality it takes to be a top tier coach
If he thinks he just skate by and continue a sales pitch that's by all accounts wearing thin or completely played out and still have a job Tennessee is far worse than I ever imagined.

If that's his true thought about it he doesent need to be HC at Tennessee. Vandy is just another game. Florida is why you come to coach at Tennessee. How many times do you think Spurrier said well it's just Tennessee Florida? He wanted to beat Tennessee and beat them bad and wasn't shy when he did. Butch needs to have a mentality that he wants to beat Florida if he expects the team to.

I have questioned since year one whether Butch is a game day coach.

That being said, Butch has worked his tail off at UT and has done far more than a sales pitch.

If he hasn't beat Florida he has NOT done everything asked of him...in fact it's the ONLY THING being asked of him in a sense. Beating Fla is a requirement. His statement about this being a must win being 'comical' sounds like he's thinking we're probably gonna lose. He's shrinking from "owning it" that's for damn sure.

He must win this game. Period...and i'll give him props if he does...despite the fact he blew the last two against them. We are a very forgiving fan base...but enough is enough. Either he wins this or we need to find someone who will. I know that's not an opinion shared by everyone, but I know it is shared by many.

I think there is a misconception coming from the "support Butch no matter what" crowd. It is entirely possible that Butch can turn out to be a legendary coach on the hill. Has he done anything thus far to indicate that he is? No way. But Nick Saban wasn't conquering the NCAA while he was at Michigan State. Bill Belichik wasn't dominating the NFL when he was with the Browns. I don't know how or why, but at some point the light bulb came on for those guys. I'm still holding out hope that it does for Butch too. Having said all that... This is Butch's last chance for a "Eureka" moment at Tennessee. If he can't beat Florida today, he's not the guy.
