MURFREESBORO — Local lawmakers criticized the state’s $32 billion budget’s lack of raises for teachers at a roundtable held Friday morning.

“Education is the second most important thing in the budget behind security. We should fund education first, and we aren’t,” state Rep. Rick Womick, R-Rockvale, said at Capital Connections, a question and answer event held monthly at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce during the legislative session.

Womick went on to criticize $240 million in funding for renovations at the University of Tennessee and another $20 million appropriated for a football practice facility at another unnamed state-funded university.

If you are a teacher or state employee with the incoming revenue around 73 million or so shortfall you are out.............at least this is what I gather.

From where I stand the renovations at UT are long overdue. It is a public university and the state has a responsibility to upkeep and modernize it.

I met him at the gym once, I introduced myself, and the first thing he said was " Go Vols"

I was decked out in UT gear like normal

We talked about UT football for a bit and I got the impression that he really likes Butch

Why pay teachers when we aspire kids to bash their heads together thousands of times. They won't be able to remember anything in a few years anyways.

I agree defense and education should be the top two things we spend money on in this country, and currently education gets the short end of the stick. But we are talking about giving teachers raises here.. That is not what I am talking about.. we need to hire MORE teachers and lower class sizes and get more technology into the hands of students as america is falling farther and farther behind the rest of the world. And we seriously can not afford to let that happen.

Rick Womick is trying to distort the issues with semantics. Teachers live well compared to the majority of this country. And giving them an extra 1000$ a year is not going to change the way our education system operates. JMO

It is not an either or. This is sour grapes. You didn't get what you want in the budget so let's go criticize what is in the budget.

I could care less. I don't have any kids in public schools. However, we better fix some things in football or it will disappear as we know it. How many parents are going to let their children play football given the info we have now about concussions? If kids don't play, they won't be fans. I almost feel guilty watching these kids literally bash their brains in for my entertainment.

That being said, you couldn't pay me enough to teach today's spoiled and bratty children or deal with their apologist parents. They should be paid a million a year.

I agree that money needs to be spent on education; however, it is amazing as to how many people are under the impression that if we just throw money at a problem, then the problem will fix itself.

I can personally remember us spending alot of money on education since the Jimmy Carter years and education has not gotten better.

It is not a money issue. It is an issue that the parents need to instill the value of education to their children and an issue that children need to develop a love for learning.

If the kids hero's are not very educated, then they may not see the value of an education either.

So, yes spending money on education might help but it won't cure the problems we have with education in this country.

I maybe wrong and probly am, but I believe the funding mentioned for the football facility is for ETSU. Sate rep Tony Shipley or Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey had mentioned it in prior budget talks here in the extreme northeast end of the state.

Probably can't fault our wealthy governor. Billion(s) spent on Tenncare. Don't get me wrong, I know some people legitimately need it. But there is something about irresponsible people and drug abusers having baby(ies) and we are enabling this behavior. Like I said I know some people really need it but I also know there are drug abusers out there having a baby and to the point of giving up custody and both parents are in jail. What the heck? True story btw. I know of a single/girl that has few babies that quit her job because she was making too much and would lose her benefits.Another fact.

Welfare has been abused since its inception. It should be for people who WORK, but just don't make enough to live above the poverty line, not for people to sit at home on the couch and get fat.

Our government should set up a system where instead of just handing these people money, we make them work for it. put them to work cleaning our streets, making clothes among a host of other things they could do to earn that money instead of being handed freebies.

We already give them the money, so it would cost us nothing to set up this system. This is america, you want money then be willing to work for it. JMO

I am coaching a baseball team of kids and am not a teacher. The kids have some things that are frustrating but most of it goes back to the parents who tell them to not listen to coaches because they know how to win at 8 year old ball instead of learning the correct way to play the game. With all of the family drama and personal situations, I can have a small glimpse of the junk teachers have to deal with. The classroom has a lot more responsibility than the ball field. I feel for these teachers who do really care (some for whatever reason do not) and what they have to put up with. Parents are really idiots and the family breakdown exasperates everything. The kids suffer the most.

To his credit he did up pay for state employees last year so that imo makes up for the missed raise and he is trying to pass the free education com college Tennessee with the 300 million extra lottery funds. So he has been pretty solid imo so far.

my wife is a teacher... a lot of parents treat school as a daycare... drop them off,
pick them up,then when open houses come around once every 2-3 months, they then want to raise hell because lil Jimmy has 3 F's in math...why not come to the teacher and see what the problem is when the 1st failing grade was posted? I know, because they suck as parents...

there is not enough money to make me want to go into that profession...and add all the moronic grading systems they now grade teachers on,the constant pressure placed on them, and the crappy pay,no thanks... its a very thankless job for the most part
