Worst coaching hire ever. A few of Kiffin's records at Tennessee:

1) Highest attrition in shortest period of time of 4/5* recruits inherited from prior roster;
2) Highest attrition in shortest period of time of 4/5* recruits from his own 2009 recruiting class;
3) Worst NCAA investigation/scandals in shortest period of time of any coach who was on campus for merely a season.

He did this while putting up the 3rd worst record at Tennessee in 20 seasons, losing to the likes of lowly UCLA at home and one of the worst losses in Tennessee history to a pedestrian Ole Miss team, intermixed with a winless record against top-20 foes, undermining the brand of UT football, and making us a joke with his off-field conduct.

I don't understand how people have trouble with this. The way it is now, people are optimistic about the near future. It certainly wouldn't be that way if Fulmer was here for another year.

Wonder if any of these have actually been checked or if someone can prove them completely wrong with 5 minutes of research, as is the norm.

Right but the expectation should be that some of the class turn out to be really good. The expectation should also be that the vast majority stay in school and help the team. You need top notch guys and you need solid guys.

The expectation is always that there will be attrition following a staff change.

This line of logic evaporated the moment Ogre picked up the UT mobile phone and told the kids not to go to class.

well that's like, your opinion, man. nobody here knows where we'd be at right now had fulmer stayed. he was pulling in a top 10 class on his own before kiffin came in. we certainly wouldn't be so short on scholarship players. i would say, if fulmer stayed another year and had another losing season, he would be gone anyways and we would have gotten a different coach than kiff as his replacement. whether it would have been dooley, who knows. like i said before, i really just wish we had hired dooley 2 years ago.

I'd argue Bill Battle did far more damage to Tennessee. Not even a decade ago Bama hired a coach that lasted about a month. Mike Dubose ran Alabama into the ground and got them in far more trouble with the NCAA than Kiffin has gotten us into.

First saying there is not one fan on this board that won't, let me be one that will tell you I was against the hire from the beginning. Secondly,it still kills me how people can back these coaches who don't honor contracts, and yes I know everyone does it. Doesn't make it right, if you or I tried something to this effect we would be sued for breach of contract. And yes that goes across the board for all coaches anywhere.

ok you can say what you want about kiffin being a crappy coach but you need to blame this loss on the offensive line and running back for not being able to gain 1 yard..they had 4th and goal on the 1 to win the game and they couldnt get it done.

well he had to pay a buyout to leave...you can blame that on your athletic director for signing him to a loose contract that allowed him to leave. say what you want but at least he had the vols on espn everyday. a lot like he has usc on espn all the time. i dont like kiffin but we could win every game but if nobody cares what have we accomplished?

Is that all you have out of all those failures by Kiffin? One guys who just happens to still be on the team trying to get good enough to contribute?

Let's put it this way... I know starry eyed Kiffin idolizers struggle with reason.... Kevin Revis may never contribute significantly for UT other than scout teams however he has a 100% greater likelihood of contributing than most of Kiffin's 09 stars- Brown, Nuke, Askew, etc.

You all act as if stars are all that matter and Kiffin is an infallible, "greatest of all time" recruiter. The fact is he brought 11 4/5* players in 09 and only 4 of them remain on the roster. Maybe he should have looked at character a little harder... woops, he'd be like the guy on Billy Madison trying to answer the Business Ethics question, huh? I guess he could recognize character by looking for kids unlike himself.

Neither have Bryce Brown, Nuke, James Greene, Myles, Meline, Robert Nelson, Mike Edwards,... It cuts both ways if you want to go down that trail.

I don't know of a lot of people who consider Kiffin a great recruiter. Orgeron is a different story.

No doubt, looking back, Kiffin was a bad hire. But at the time he was brought on, was there a way of foreshadowing what would later ensue? Just further evidence that Al Davis and Les Miles control the universe.

If the 09 class had still fallen apart even close to what it has, there would have been alot of Vol fans with their eyes opened. If he had coached UT as poorly as he coached USC this past fall, the Vols would probably have lost 7 or 8 games. That would have opened eyes. If he were still around you can be sure the NCAA would be looking at UT even more critically than they are. Many fans would have seen that.

You are right. At the point he left before we knew how bad the NCAA stuff might eventually get and before we knew the 09 class was going to disintegrate... most of us were on board. I was.

The subject is Kiffin's 09 class. The only one HE signed at UT. It is obvious that his idolizers want to rationalize everything he failed on away so they can perpetuate the myth that he's some kind of coaching and recruiting god. Lane Kiffin is VERY mortal when it comes to coaching and recruiting.

Yes. If private companies can spend $20K testing and evaluating mgt hires for $45K jobs then there should be significantly more to ensure you make a good hire for UT's HC.
